New documentary examines the fall of Massive Resistance in Va.  11/14/09 12:01 AM

Anne Rhodes Baltimore, an AfricanAmerican now in her 60s, trudged up a long hill to Warren County High School, which shut down in the late 1950s rather than admit black students. “Why did they go to all this trouble?“ she said in a choked voice. Baltimore would eventually be among a group of black students who desegregated the school. But her question is at the heart of “Locked Out,“ a documentary on the fall of Massive Resistance 50 years ago. It will air Monday at 9 p.m. on PBS stations WCVE and WHTJ.

Chester mom Hannah Keeley’s show on local PBS affiliate

Hannah Keeley, a Chester wife and mother of seven, kicks off a new facet to her burgeoning mom-pire this weekend—a TV show. “Hannah Help Me!“ has been picked up by PBS stations nationwide. Beginning tomorrow, it will air Saturdays at 7 a.m. on Richmond affiliate WCVE. The reality show features Keeley helping America’s overwhelmed mothers manage their households, declutter their homes, get in shape and try to take control of their personal lives and careers.

Public TV stations latest to go digital  03/27/09 12:01 AM

Central Virginia’s public television stations will be the latest to broadcast all in digital. At noon Monday, WCVE, WHTJ and WCVW will stop broadcasting in the analog format and will exclusively use a digital signal, said Curtis Monk, president and CEO of Community Idea Stations, which owns the three stations. The conversion is part of the nationwide digital television transition, which was mandated by Congress. By June 12, all high-power television stations in the country will have to use a digital signal only.

A. Edward Ooghe, retired Richmond educator, dies  01/19/09 12:00 AM

A. Edward Ooghe received a national media award for hosting the “Adventures in Science” TV program. It was June 1986, and A. Edward Ooghe had been principal of Ginter Park Elementary School for nine years. The Richmond school superintendent insisted that policy said it was time to move on after seven. But Ginter Park parents, teachers and students resisted such a move. The Richmond School Board debated behind closed doors and then sided with them.
