Football: King William 22, West Point 18  11/06/09 10:16 PM

King William (3-0 Tidewater, 7-2) handed West Point (3-1, 9-1) its first loss of the season and took control of the Tidewater District. West Point held a 12-0 lead at halftime, but King William’s Daryl Powell scored three second half touchdowns to give King William the win. He had eight receptions for 100 yards. King William’s Lewis Redman was 13 of 23 for three TDs, three interceptions and 166 yards.

KING & QUEEN COURTHOUSE—Antonio and Aaron Roane combined for six touchdowns as the Pointers routed the Royal Tigers (0-2 Tidewater, 1-6) to stay unbeaten. Aaron Roane scored on both sides of the field, taking an interception 39 yards for a score and rushing for 139 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Antonio Roane ground out 121 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries for West Point (2-0, 8-0).

Antonio Roane’s 143 yards and four touchdowns helped lead West Point past Middlesex. Aaron Roane added 134 yards on 17 carries for the Pointers, and Lavonte Brown scored on a 55-yard interception return and a 75-yard kickoff return. WEST POINT—West Point’s potent ground game propelled the Pointers to a nondistrict victory over the reigning Group A, Division 1 state champions. West Point coach John Fulks couldn’t remember the last time West Point beat Franklin, and it’s been a long, long time since the Pointers began a season 6-0. Antonio Roane carried the ball 23 times for 168 yards and three touchdowns. Aaron Roane contributed 113 yards on 20 carries and caught a TD pass from Josh Ammons. Lavonte Brown added 75 yards on 15 carries. Jonas Goins booted a 32-yard field goal and five extra points.

DENDRON—Brothers Antonio Roane and Aaron Roane each rushed for three touchdowns to lead West Point to a nondistrict win over Surry County. Aaron Roane rushed for 142 yards on 19 carries and scored West Point’s first two touchdowns. Antonio Roane added 69 yards on 17 carries. He also ran for three two-point conversions. Lavonte Brown gained 97 yards on 12 carries for West Point (5-0).

West Point ran all over North Hampton on the legs of its running backs. Aaron Roane had 153 yards on six carries and two touchdowns. LaVonte Brown had 114 yards on six carries, rushed for two touchdowns and returned a punt 64 yards for another score. Antonio Roane had 122 yards on four carries and scored three touchdowns. Ike Reid had a 90 yard kickoff return for North Hampton.

Charles Herbert “Herb” Brown Jr., retired West Point educator, dies  08/29/09 12:01 AM

At West Point High School, where he retired as associate principal in 1993, easygoing Charles Herbert “Herb” Brown Jr., also a band-choral director and teacher, was in charge of discipline. “He found good in everybody. He loved everyone. It didn’t matter who you were or where you lived,“ said his wife, Margaret Hill Brown. Since his death at age 72 from multiple myeloma on Tuesday, “many kids have come by and said that Mr. Brown would suspend them and they’d walk out of his office smiling,“ she said.

Aaron Roanes ran for two touchdowns, and brother Antonio contributed to two more in leading West Point over Chincoteague. Aaron had eight carries for 121 yards, including TD runs of 55 and 36 yards, while Aaron (eight carries, 188 yards) ran for a 36-yard touchdown. He also threw a 45-yard pass to Josh Ammons for a TD. Lavonte Brown started things off with a 20-yard run for a score in the first quarter, finishing with nine carries for 100 yards for the Pointers (1-0).

Girls: West Point 50, Mathews 46  02/26/09 10:44 PM

Kiera Gaines scored 20 points to go along with six assists, and Courtney Bell had 20 points and pulled down 10 boards as West Point slipped past Mathews in the semifinals of the Group A, Region A, Division 1 tournament. Paige Rowlett netted 11 points, and Kristen Medlin grabbed 10 rebounds for the Pointers. West Point will face Franklin tomorrow night in the final at Surry.

T.T. Carey had 28 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, and became Colonial Beach’s all-time leading scorer with 2,238 points as the Drifters hammered West Point. Dylan Farinet scored 23 points to go along with 14 rebounds and six assists, and Jamel Dickerson tallied 11 points for Colonial Beach. Aaron Roane led the Pointers with a team-high 20 points.
