Charles Herbert “Herb” Brown Jr., retired West Point educator, dies
At West Point High School, where he retired as associate principal in 1993, easygoing Charles Herbert “Herb” Brown Jr., also a band-choral director and teacher, was in charge of discipline. “He found good in everybody. He loved everyone. It didn’t matter who you were or where you lived,“ said his wife, Margaret Hill Brown. Since his death at age 72 from multiple myeloma on Tuesday, “many kids have come by and said that Mr. Brown would suspend them and they’d walk out of his office smiling,“ she said.

Colleague: Skydiver died after chute opened early
A longtime skydiving instructor and veteran Army soldier whose body was discovered Sunday near West Point apparently died as a result of his reserve chute opening prematurely as he prepared to jump. State police released few details about what they said appeared to be the accidental death of Command Sgt. Maj. Harry L. Parrish Jr., 53, of Fort Meade, Md. State police said the death remains under investigation.

Md. skydiver dies near West Point
The body of a veteran soldier and skydiver, the victim of an apparent skydiving accident, was found yesterday about 5 miles east of West Point’s Middle Peninsula Regional Airport. State police released few details into what they said appeared to be the accidental death of Command Sgt. Maj. Harry L. Parrish Jr., 53, of Fort Meade, Md. Parrish was conducting an airborne civilian training program with 14 students Saturday about 7 p.m. when he left the plane.

Instructor dies in West Point skydiving incident
State Police said today that the body of a skydiving instructor missing since Saturday evening was located this morning near Middle Peninsula Regional Airport in West Point. Authorities identified the instructor as Command Sgt. Major Harry Parrish, 53, of Fort Meade, Md. An investigation is continuing into how Parrish fell from a plane after jumping with a group of 14 civilians. The accident occurred about 7 p.m. His body was found Sunday about 11 a.m.

West Point uneasy over status of paper mill
Since 1914, the giant paper mill on the Pamunkey River has sustained the town of West Point and adjoining counties with hundreds of well-paying jobs. The steam spiraling out of its boilers has symbolized prosperity. So a collective shudder ran through the Middle Peninsula on Jan. 26 when the paper mill’s parent company, Smurfit-Stone Container Corp., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in an effort to restructure its heavy debt. The Chicago-based company owns 150 facilities, including a mill in Hopewell, two smaller plants near Richmond and a plant in Martinsville.

West Point, King William, Hanover grad rates near top
Connie Plum’s students can call her on her cell phone after school hours if they’re worried about something. The King William High School teacher has been known to call a few bosses to ask them to work around after-school sessions for a struggling student. She calls homes when her kids do well, not just when things are bad. Those are just some of the ways Plum said she shows her students that she cares about their future.
