William and Mary stuns U.Va. 26-14
CHARLOTTESVILLE—Let a team like William and Mary hang around long enough, and they just might start thinking they belong. Which they do. A raucous celebration 23 years in the making unfolded in the end zone as the Tribe celebrated a 26-14 victory against the ‘Hoos last night. The rest of the stadium emptied out, save for scattered boos and calls for the head of a suddenly unpopular head coach.
Tribe stuns error-prone Cavaliers
CHARLOTTESVILLE—Let a team like William and Mary hang around long enough, and they just might start thinking they belong. Which they do. The Tribe defeated the Hoos for the first time since 1986, a 26-14 victory orchestrated by a Charlottesville native, quarterback R.J. Archer. He had an assist from U.Va., which stumbled and bumbled over itself in all three phases of the game.

Tribe’s Archer: ready to take his turn
You’ve been a valuable wide receiver for two years. And then an offer comes to return to quarterback, the position you came to college to play. But there’s a catch. You’ll have to be a backup behind a successful senior quarterback. You’ll have to stand on the sideline most of the time and essentially sacrifice a year of your career. And then you’ll get a one-shot deal as a senior.

Laycock leaving motivation to seniors
WILLIAMSBURG—Jimmye Laycock is entering his 30th season as the William and Mary football coach, and early indications are that it could be a laid-back one. As the Tribe starts practice this week, the coach will encourage his seniors to take charge and motivate the team throughout the season. “You’re always better off when you have good leadership from within,“ Laycock said. “And there’s a lot of them.“

Local firm turned Tribe’s Cox into draft choice
In an age when two television networks and a small army of analysts offer around-the-clock coverage of the NFL draft, somehow nobody noticed Derek Cox. “It wasn’t like I completely came out of nowhere,“ Cox said. No, it only seemed that way. The Jacksonville Jaguars turned heads Sunday by trading up to select the William and Mary cornerback in the third round of the draft.

Top college level isn’t the only source for NFL talent in Virginia
Ten players from Virginia schools were selected in the 2009 NFL draft. Only half were Hoos or Hokies. From colleges other than Virginia and Virginia Tech, the NFL’s 256-player harvest included: a third-rounder from William and Mary (CB Derek Cox); a fourth-rounder from the University of Richmond (DE Lawrence Sidbury); a fourth-rounder from Saint Paul’s (CB Greg Toler); a sixth-rounder from Norfolk State (CB Don Carey); and a seventh-rounder from Liberty (RB Rashad Jennings).

Tribe’s Cox surprising pick in third round of NFL draft
He never made first-team all-Colonial Athletic Association, but William and Mary cornerback Derek Cox was selected in the NFL draft’s third round yesterday. Cox, from Winterville, N.C., went to the Jacksonville Jaguars with the ninth pick of the third round. Most analysts didn’t project Cox as a draft choice. The 6-1 182-pounder was not invited to February’s NFL combine.
