Hanoi Meneses, a 37-year-old overnight bartender at the Hotel Raquel in Old Havana, can’t wait for the freedom to travel outside Cuba. Like many in this island nation of just more than 11 million, he’s hoping President Obama and the Castro brothers will make a deal. Soon. But his first stop won’t be the U.S. He’ll be headed to Spain.

Retired Philip Morris vice president William G. Longest Jr. dies
William Gwathmey Longest Jr., who died Thursday at 83, presided as vice president over leaf operations for Philip Morris USA for 10 years before he retired in January 1984. Although Philip Morris is a giant business, “some of its departments are known for their familylike atmosphere and distinctive camaraderie,“ wrote Benjamin Ussery, who served as director of field operations in the leaf department under Mr. Longest. Mr. Longest greatly contributed to that atmosphere, he said.

Longwood student from Henrico named McGowan Scholar
Jillian Klein, a Longwood University senior from Henrico County, is the university’s William G. McGowan Scholar for 2008-09. The McGowan Scholars Program, made possible by the McGowan Charitable Fund, funds one full-tuition scholarship for an undergraduate or graduate business student at selected colleges accredited by AACSB International.
