Treasure trove
St. Mary's (Md.) senior field hockey midfielder Emily Smithson (James River) was named Monday to the NFHCA's Division III all-South Region first team after scoring a team-leading 10 goals and 23 points.
The all-South selection was the fourth 2008 postseason distinction earned by Smithson. She was earlier chosen as the Capital Athletic Conference co-player of the year and named to the all-CAC first team.
In addition, Smithson has been invited to participate in today's NFHCA Division III North/South Senior All-Star game at Ursinus College.
Finishing with flair
Bruce McMullen (Varina), a senior fullback for U.Va.-Wise, saved his best for the final game of his college career.
McMullen carried 10 times for 128 yards and three touchdowns in last Saturday's 47-12 victory over Faulkner. His scoring runs covered 44, 6 and 13 yards. McMullen entered the game with 31 carries for 112 yards and one score.
Unprecedented success
Syracuse senior field hockey midfielder Shannon Taylor (James River) set single-season school records for goals (31) and points (79) while leading her club to a 22-1 record.
Taylor was a all-Big East first-team selection after leading the Orange in goals, points, game-winning goals (six) and hat tricks (five). She scored twice in the Orange's 3-2 first-round victory over Massachusetts.
Life in the fast lane
VMI freshman swimmer James Goodwillie (Mills Godwin/Nova) set a school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle by winning in 10:04.89 in last weekend's victory over New Jersey Institute of Technology.
The program record was Goodwillie's third of the young season (200 back, 400 individual medley, 1,000 free). Goodwillie collected a second individual victory against NJIT in the 100 back. He won that race in 55.14, more than 2½ seconds in front of his closest pursuer.
Sharing the spotlight
Lynchburg junior forward Allie Weir (James River) was named the ODAC co-field hockey player of the year after leading the league in goals (35) and points (75) for the third time in as many years and led her club to its third straight ODAC championship.
Weir led the ODAC in game-winning goals with seven. She currently sits in third place on the ODAC's career charts with 100 goals and 221 points.
Joining Weir on the all-ODAC first team were sister Jenny Weir, a sophomore midfielder from James River (seven goals and 12 assists), Randolph-Macon goalkeeper Ashley Crouch, a senior from Thomas Dale (.821 save percentage) and Washington and Lee senior defender Liz Garson (Collegiate).
Bulletin board
Washington and Lee volleyball player Kassie Bagley finished her senior season with 96 blocks and now occupies 3rd place in the Generals' career list (340). . . . Virginia Tech sophomore swimmer Carter Moore (Mills Godwin/Poseidon) won the 200 breaststroke (2:06.86) in a win over ACC foe Clemson. . . . Radford freshman volleyball player Katelyn Meeks (Mills Godwin) was cited as the Big South libero of the week after piling up 66 digs in three matches.
Hannah Hesser (Trinity Episcopal/Poseidon) won the 200-meter butterfly (2:38.32) and helped Sweet Briar swim to a school record in the 400 medley relay (4:52.11) against Washington and Lee. . . . Anne Goodrich-Stuart (Mills Godwin) delivered 11 kills and 11 digs in Principia's volleyball victory over Greenville.
