Hokies slip past Cavaliers

BLACKSBURG -- Austin Wates hit a walk-off home run with one out in the 10th inning to lift Virginia Tech to a 5-4 victory over No. 10 Virginia yesterday to conclude the regular season. The Hokies' win breaks their 12-game losing streak to Virginia which dated to the 2003 season.

Klint Reed (L.C. Bird) went 2 for 5 with a run and Ronnie Shaban (Cosby) had a hit and scored twice for the Hokies.

Tyler Cannon, Franco Valdes and Keith Werman had two hits apiece for the Cavaliers, with Valdes adding a home run. Dan Grovatt and Jarrett Parker also added homers for Virginia.

PHILADELPHIA -- Richmond broke an 8-8 tie with three runs in the seventh inning and held on to defeat La Salle in Atlantic 10 play. Billy Barber had two hits, two RBI and got the win in relief for the Spiders.

Chris Cowell and Cameron Brown each had three hits and a home run, and Adam McConnell had a hit, scored two runs and stole his team-leading 30th and 31st bases of the season. Mike Mergenthaler finished with two hits, two RBI and a run as the Spiders tallied 14 hits.

NEWARK, Del. -- Joe Van Meter went 2 for 3 and Doug Otto scored a run but Virginia Commonwealth fell to CAA rival Delaware.

After giving up five runs in the first two innings, pitcher Seth Cutler-Voltz (Henrico) held the Blue Hens to just one run over the next six innings and struck out nine. Delaware's Brian Rorick was a little stronger in the pitching duel, fanning 13 Rams and scattering four hits.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- John Lynch and Chris Warren each had three hits for Norfolk State but the sixth-seeded Spartans were dropped by No. 1 seed Bethune-Cookman 12-3 in the first round of the tournament.

NSU will face the loser of Delaware State-North Carolina A&T today at 10 a.m.

NCAA Division III

Trae Bailey, Chris Despins and Eric Cole had two hits apiece as Christopher Newport edged Salisbury 5-4 in the first round of the South Region tournament in Salisbury, Md. Reliever Kevin Moreland improved to 4-0 on the season with the win.

In another tournament game, Washington and Lee was eliminated from postseason play with an 8-3 loss to Washington & Jefferson. The Generals got on the board in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Terrence McKelvey, and scored a pair of runs in the ninth but that was all they could muster.



GOLF

NCAA Division I

GALLOWAY, N.J. -- Led by Kyle Stough's 1-over-par 72, Virginia was perched in third place after the first round of the NCAA East Region golf tournament. Virginia Commonwealth was in 10th.

The Cavaliers posted a 14-over-par 298 and trailed Tennessee by two strokes. VCU was 19 strokes back at 315.

Stough was tied for second, one shot behind Tennessee's Darren Renwick. Renwick was the only player in the 75-man field to match par. U.Va. freshman Ben Kohles was tied for seventh after carding a 3-over 74.

VCU junior Lanto Griffin was tied for 18th at 5-over 76. He had three birdies but two double-bogeys. Rams sophomore Mark Jargren had a 7-over 78.

The second of three rounds is scheduled for today. The top five teams advance to the NCAA Championships May 26-30 in Toledo, Ohio.

NCAA East Region

Tennessee 296, Wake Forest 297, Virginia 298 , Alabama 303, Illinois 307, Colorado State 309, Clemson 310, Kent State 312, Minnesota 314, VCU 315 , Penn State 319, Coastal Carolina 319, Sacred Heart 322, Columbia 355.

Washington and Lee's Joe Gibson shot a 2-under 70 to take third place of out 185 players during the second round of the NCAA Division III championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The Generals are tied for 15th overall.


SOFTBALL

NCAA tournament

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- A pair of solo home runs proved the difference as Radford fell 3-1 to No. 8 Georgia in the first round of the Division I tournament.

Sarah Himan recorded two hits and scored the lone run for the Highlanders, who were making their first NCAA appearance.
