Rams' high-jumper aims for 7-foot mark
Ronnie Black figures he will need to join the "7-foot club" to have a chance at winning the high jump in next week's USA Junior National Track and Field championships in Eugene, Ore.
Black, who turns 19 in August, qualified for the event by clearing 6-10¾ in his freshman season with VCU.
"If I hit 7 feet on my first attempt, I think I'll be set for the top four," he said.
The top two move on to the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships in Trinidad on July 31 and Aug. 1-2.
Ten jumpers topped 7 feet in the NCAA championships. Black, who stands 6-4½, didn't qualify after finishing 17th in the NCAA East regional with a leap of 6-8¾.
Black, out of Menchville High in Newport News, won three meets this season.
