Colleges roundup: Hoos rally past Hokies

BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech's season ended yesterday with a 6-4 loss to Virginia. The Cavaliers will continue playing at the ACC tournament, and potentially the NCAA tournament.
The Hokies will not qualify for the conference tournament, finishing with a 12-17 record. Their 32-21 overall mark, however, represents their best winning percentage since 1999.
Yesterday, the Cavs trailed 4-2 entering the decisive seventh inning, when they put up four runs and forced Tech starter Mathew Price from the game. Phil Gosselin hit a triple in the rally, and was batted in by Danny Hultzen.
Hultzen then came on to throw a perfect three innings of relief, including four strikeouts. Kevin Arico finished the Hokies off on senior day at English Field.
Virginia's Tyler Cannon went 3 for 4 and scored two runs. Mike Kaminski went 2 for 4 for the Hokies, including his sixth home run of the season.

NEWARK, Del. - The Rams' season ended as the Blue Hens broke open a 3-3 tie in the fourth inning and cruised to victory.
VCU finishes its season with a 20-26 overall record, and an 8-16 CAA record.
Delaware starter Rich O'Donald struggled early but was able to recover and pitch four scoreless innings to shut down VCU.

PHILADELPHIA - The Spiders led 4-1 going into the bottom of the ninth, but the Explorers tied it before pushing the winning run across in the 10th inning.
Richmond had reason to feel good after freshman Zach Jung turned in one of the best starts, going 52/3 innings and allowing one run. It was the final game for the Spiders, who finished 22-25 overall, 11-16 in the Atlantic-10.
It was a big day for junior Cameron Brown, who was 3 for 5 with a solo home run. Senior Ryan Metzroth had a hit to finish his final season with a .300 batting average.

Christopher Newport's season ended at the hands of Johns Hopkins, which won 12-5 at the South Region tournament in Salisbury, Md. Mike Giarrizzi had a double in the loss.
MEAC championship
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Norfolk State's season ended with a 15-2 loss to No. 3 seed Florida A&M, leaving the Spartans with a 22-23 record.
The Rattlers scored eight runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take control of the game on Norfolk State starter Ryan Davis.

U.Va. postponed
The University of Virginia men's match against USC in the NCAA tournament has been postponed to this morning at 10 a.m. The Trojans lead 1-0 after doubles play in College Station, Texas.
GOLF
Cavs headed to tourney
GALLOWAY, N.J. - Unranked entering the weekend, the Virginia men's team is NCAA tournament-bound after finishing fourth at the Northeast Region tournament to snag a spot as an automatic qualifier.
During the final round, the Cavs shot a 300 to finish the three-day tournament at 889. The winning score was Alabama's 874.
Virginia was led by freshman Ben Kohles, wh posted a 221 to finish 11th overall. Senior Conrad Von Borsig finished in a tie for 14th at 222 and will play in his first NCAA championship.
"It was the best feeling in the world," he said. "It took a lot of hard work, and that made it all really satisfying."
VCU's season ended with a 12th place finish at the event. CAA golfer of the year Lanto Griffin placed 38th overall.
Virginia Tech finished in 12th place in the Austin Region at the University of Texas Golf Club. Senior Drew Weaver finished with a 221 to tie for 12th place overall, finishing 12 strokes off the lead. Sophomore Garland Green tied for 45th with a 228, and sophomore Marshall Bailey tied for 48th with a 240.
Old Dominion's Eric Onesi placed 30th in the South Central Region, which was held at Oklahoma State University. ODU did not qualify to compete as a team.
In the NCAA Division III tournament, Washington and Lee shot a team score of 1,232 to rank 17th out of 36 teams in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Generals juniors Joe Gibson and Brad Watts each shot 305 to tie for 51st overall.
SOFTBALL
NCAA Division I
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - James Madison was bounced from the tournament when No. 15 Tennessee rallied for a 4-3 in the opening round of the Knoxville Region.
Freshman Jessica Spigner hit a walk-off single to end the game at 12:30 a.m. yesterday. The Dukes finished the season 35-15.
