Tar Heels subdue Wolfpack

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Tyler Hansbrough scored 27 points to help third-ranked North Carolina beat North Carolina State 89-80 last night in a clash of ACC rivals.

Danny Green added 19 points for the Tar Heels, who pulled away in the second half to win their 10th straight game. North Carolina shot 55 percent to improve to 12-1 against its nearby rival since Roy Williams took over at his alma mater before the 2003-04 season.

The Tar Heels used a 14-0 run early in the second half to take control, pushing a three-point halftime lead to 53-38 with 16 minutes left. N.C. State got no closer than six points and trailed by 19 down the stretch.

Javi Gonzalez scored 18 points to lead the Wolfpack.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- James Johnson had 24 points and 11 rebounds and Wake Forest avenged its worst loss of the season by holding off Georgia Tech.

Less than three weeks after the Yellow Jackets stunned the Demon Deacons for their only ACC win of the season, Wake Forest saw a 23-point lead cut to five before pulling away behind Johnson's dominance inside.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Toney Douglas scored 24 points and Uche Echefu added 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Florida State to a victory over Miami.

The Seminoles made 31 of 35 free throws and put the clamps on Miami scoring leader Jack McClinton for most of the game, limiting him to 13 points. McClinton, who had scored 101 points in the last three games, had just five at halftime and went nearly 25½ minutes without scoring through the middle of the game.

James Dews led Miami with a season-high 19 points.

Douglas scored 17 of his points in the second half.
