U.Va. rallies past Cleveland State

CANCUN, Mexico -- Guard Sylven Landesberg scored 20 points to lead five Virginia players in double figures, and the Cavaliers rallied from a 34-27 halftime deficit to defeat Cleveland State 76-65 yesterday in the Cancun Challenge.

Forward Will Sherrill, who went 4 for 5 from 3-point range, added 18 points for U.Va. Mike Scott (18), Mustapha Farrakhan (11) and Sammy Zeglinksi (10) also contributed double-figure efforts.

Virginia returns to action Monday night as host for Penn State in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

WISCONSIN 78, NO. 21 MARYLAND 69: Jason Bohannon scored 20 points and Jon Leuer added 16 to lead Wisconsin to a win over Maryland in the third-place game of the Maui Invitational at the Lahaina (Hawaii) Civic Center. Trevon Hughes scored 14 points for the Badgers (4-1). Greivis Vasquez led Maryland (4-2) with 18 points.

State

W&M 62, HAMPTON 61: Quinn McDowell scored 11 points, including two free throws down the stretch, and William and Mary defeated Hampton in Williamsburg. The Tribe (3-2) broke a 57-57 tie on a free throw by Danny Sumner with 3:40 left. Steven Hess then put William and Mary ahead 60-57 on a jump shot with 1:44 remaining.

The Pirates (0-4) cut the gap to one with 1:22 remaining on Charles Funches' jump shot. With 47 seconds left, McDowell made both of his free throws as the Tribe went ahead 62-59.

On the Pirates' next possession, Mike Tuill hit two free throws with 44 seconds to pull to 62-61. But Hampton couldn't score on its next possession as Darrion Pellum missed a 3-pointer with 8 seconds to play.

E ASTERN MENNONITE 81, FERRUM 66: George Johnson led five Eastern Mennonite players in double figures with 18 points, and the Royals (5-0) pulled away from a tie at halftime to beat host Ferrum.



Top 25

NO. 13 UCONN 81, LSU 55: Jerome Dyson and backcourt mate Kemba Walker each scored 20 points, and Connecticut (4-0) routed previously unbeaten LSU in the semifinals of the NIT Season Tip-Off in New York.

Gavin Edwards added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Huskies, who advanced to play No. 7 Duke or Arizona State for the championship tomorrow at Madison Square Garden. Stanley Robinson finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
