FUMA’s one-handed basketball player headed to Manhattan
Despite a left arm that ends just below the elbow, Kevin Laue is a force on the basketball court.
Kevin Laue, the one-handed center for Fork Union Military Academy's post-graduate team, has accepted a basketball scholarship from Manhattan College, a Jaspers spokesman confirmed yesterday.
Laue, 6-11 and 232 pounds, is from Pleasanton, Calif. His left arm extends to just below the elbow, the result of a birth defect. He came to FUMA for the exposure that could lead to a Division I scholarship. Manhattan is a Division I school, as are Wofford and Colgate, which also were recruiting Laue. At FUMA, Laue averaged 10 points and 5 rebounds.
Interest in Laue came mostly from Division II and Division III schools until recently.
"He's a good player. It wasn't like he couldn't do it," said FUMA coach Fletcher Arritt. "Somebody just had to take a chance." -- John O'Connor
