Virginia Commonwealth University is set to hire Florida assistant coach Shaka Smart as its new basketball coach, said two sources close to the situation.

Smart, 32, succeeds Anthony Grant, who left to become Alabama's coach.

A press conference to introduce Smart has been scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at the Siegel Center. It is open to the public.

Smart was an assistant this past season at Florida, a role Grant also held before taking the reins at VCU.

Before joining Billy Donovan's staff with the Gators, Smart spent two years as an assistant at Clemson and three years as an assistant at Akron. He also has served as the director of basketball operations at Dayton and as an assistant at California University of Pennsylvania.

Smart played at Kenyon College in Ohio, where he is the school's career assists leader (542). -- Tim Pearrell

I have to admit my bias—- I am a big Shaka Smart fan. I live in Akron, Ohio where Coach Smart coached for the University of Akron and know his wife’s family very well. VCU is getting a class act—the total package. He is smart, hard-working, wise, honest, kind, funny and an awesome role model for his players. We are soooooo proud of him. We knew his star was fast-rising and appreciate that VCU knows a star when they meet one. Take good care of him Richmond and VCU—he will make you proud, too.
