Smith, Long lead GMU past Ohio

FAIRFAX, Va. - Dre Smith and Cam Long each scored 15 points and George Mason never trailed during a 74-65 victory over Ohio yesterday.

Ryan Pearson added 13 points as five players scored in double figures for the Patriots, who won their third straight game despite seeing an early 19-point lead cut to five points on four occasions in the second half.

Jerome Tillman had 22 points and 16 rebounds for Ohio, and Steven Coleman scored 14 of his 16 points inside the final 5:16, including a driving layup that pulled the Bobcats within five at 66-61.

George Mason hit nine of its last 10 free throws, with Smith making seven, to seal the win.

Smith earlier hit two 3-pointers in a 14-0 run that helped the Patriots to a 30-11 lead during a first half when they shot 5 of 11 from 3-point range. They were just 1 of 8 after halftime.

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Tirrell Baines scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds to help Marshall hold off Old Dominion.

The Thundering Herd (2-3), who never trailed in the second half, broke a 45-45 tie with 11:55 left in the game on a layup by Tyler Wilkerson. Marshall took its largest lead of the half at 63-58 on Markel Humphrey's 3-pointer with 2:52 remaining.

Darius James, who finished with 11 points, made a jumper to pull the Monarchs within two points with 26 seconds left. The Thundering Herd went up 66-62 with 13 seconds remaining on two free throws by Shaquille Johnson, who finished with 10 points.

Old Dominion's Gerald Lee answered eight-seconds later with a layup. But Baines followed with two free throws to seal the victory for Marshall.

Ben Finney led ODU with 16 points, while Lee had 10.

LAS VEGAS - Dana Smith scored a team-high 18 points and Billy Robinson Jr. had 15 to lead Longwood over Delaware State in the seventh-place game of the Las Vegas Invitational.

Smith, who went 8-of-12 from the field, had eight rebounds and four assists.

Robinson had seven rebounds for Longwood.

Junior forward Frisco Sandidge led Delware State with a career-high 21 points. Sandridge went 7 of 11 from the field and was 7 of 7 from the foul line. He also had seven rebounds and four blocks.

Arturo Dubois had 13 points and 21 rebounds, while Donald Johnson had 15 points.

The Hornets trailed 37-29 at halftime but rallied in the second half. Johnson 3-pointer with 1:36 left gave them a 61-61 tie.

Smith answered with a layup on the next possession and then a jumper with 49 seconds left that put the Lancers up 65-62.

Johnson missed a potential game-tying three with :22 left.

JACKSONVILLE, Ala.- Jeremy Bynum scored 24 points and Jacksonville State held previously high-scoring VMI well under its season average in a rout.

The Keydets, who had scored more than 100 points in three of their five previous games and 97 points in the other two, trailed 47-20 at halftime.

Jacksonville State, coming off one of its biggest wins in program history - Monday night's 75-74 win over Massachusetts - made 60.9 percent of its shots (39 of 64) compared to 32.9 percent for VMI (23 of 70).

Geddes Robinson added 20 points for the Gamecocks and Brandon Crawford chipped in 18.

Chavis Holmes led VMI with 20 points and Austin Kenon had 12. Willie Bell, who was averaging 10.2 points per game, was 0 for 7 and fouled out.

The Keydets were trying to start the season 5-1 for the first time since 1977-78.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Chris Tolson had six points and a steal in overtime and Hampton beat Portland State 77-71 Friday night in the semifinals of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout.

Phil Nelson made three free throws and two 3-pointers to get Portland State within one with 19 seconds remaining in regulation, and Kyle Coston hit one of two free throws to tie it at 62.

Tolson's steal and layup with 2:02 remaining in overtime gave Hampton the lead for good. Kwame Morgan followed with a 3-pointer.

Michael Freeman scored 17 and Jordan Brooks had eight assists and three steals for the Pirates, who led by 10 with 2 minutes left in regulation.

Nelson finished with 24 points.
