WOMEN'S PRESEASON ALL-STATE TEAM

NAME/SCHOOL: Monica Wright/Virginia
THE BASICS: 5-11 senior guard
Wright, an elegant scorer who is particularly effective in transition, led the ACC with a 20.5-point scoring average in 2009. She piled up 696 points, a U.Va. single-season record. The ACC's preseason player of the year will flourish if the Cavaliers can create and sustain a fast-flowing tempo.
-----
NAME/SCHOOL: Dawn Evans/James Madison
THE BASICS: 5-7 junior guard
No one in the CAA seems capable of stopping the Dukes' dynamo. Case in point: Evans scored 36 on Old Dominion in last year's game in Norfolk. She ranked second in Division I scoring (23.8 ppg) as a sophomore. Her contributions included 92 3-pointers and 160 assists.
-----
NAME/SCHOOL: Jessica Canady/Old Dominion
THE BASICS: 6-0 senior forward
ODU lacked chemistry and direction last year. Canady, a solid citizen, seems capable of leading this year's club by example as well as by word. Her game begins with diligence. She ranked second in the CAA and 30th in the nation in 2009 with 9.6 rebounds per contest. She averaged 12.6 ppg.
-----
NAME/SCHOOL: Brittani Shells/Richmond
THE BASICS: 5-7 junior guard
Shells did it all for a UR team that won 24 games and reached the second round of the NIT in 2009. She was Richmond's runaway leader in points (15.1 ppg), assists (83) and steals (78). She became the first Spider since Kate Flavin in '05 to earn first-team all-league honors.
-----
NAME/SCHOOL: Tiffany Benson/William and Mary
THE BASICS: 6-2 senior forward
Any list of the best defenders in the CAA must begin and perhaps end with Benson. An explosive leaper, she plays 2-4 inches taller than her listed height. She blocked 85 shots last season and now sits third on the CAA's career list with 210. She is a dependable scorer (12.0 ppg) and rebounder (11.5 rpg).

FIVE GAMES WORTH WATCHING

Nov. 22 Tennessee at Virginia: The Cavaliers won an epic shootout last year in Knoxville.
Dec. 6 Richmond at VCU: A visit to the Siegel Center will test the validity of UR's high hopes.
Jan. 17 Old Dominion at James Madison: Was the Lady Monarchs' 2009 pratfall an aberration?
Jan. 18 Virginia at Virginia Tech: It's Cavs vs. Hokies in Blacksburg. Need more be said?
March 8 High Point at Liberty: These clubs were picked as co-favorites in the Big South.
-----

FIVE RISING STARS

Virginia sophomore Chelsea Shine: 6-2 forward; averaged 5.5 ppg and 3.3 as a freshman.
Liberty sophomore Avery Warley: 6-3 forward; averaged 8.1 ppg.; shot a Big South-best 62.6 percent.
James Madison junior Jalissa Taylor: 6-3 forward; finished 13th in the CAA in rebounding (6.5 rpg).
W&M sophomore Tasha Pye: 5-8 guard; averaged 19.1 over the final month of the '09 season.
Virginia Tech junior Brittany Gordon: 6-4 post; averaged 10.3 in Techs final five games of '09.
-----

FIVE FRESHMEN TO WATCH

Virginia guard China Crosby: 5-6, Manhattan Center High School; New York, N.Y.
Liberty guard Devon Brown: 5-10, Waynesboro High School
Old Dominion guard Carolann Cloutier: 5-9, Dawson College; Montreal, Que.
Virginia Tech guard Aerial Wilson: 5-8, Rockledge High School; Cocoa, Fla.
