Virginia Union leads 30-28 at halftime of NCAA Division II tourney

Erie, Pa.—Gregg Thondique and Lemoyne Williams have carried Virginia Union in the first half of its NCAA Division II quarterfinal game against Indiana (Pa.) University today. The Panthers lead at the half 30-28.


Thondique leads all scorers with 16 points and Williams has added 10. The Panthers trailed 8-0 before Williams hit a 10-footer with 17:12 left in the opening half.


Thondique eight points during a 14-0 run that put VUU up 16-11 with 11:30 remaining. The Crimson Hawks scored their first three field goals on layups, but that last six were 3-pointers. Julian Sanders knocked down a trey with 4 seconds left to leave IUP with only a 2-point deficit.


If the second-seeded Panthers win, they will face Kutztown in tomorrow’s semifinals. Kutztown defeated West Virginia State 99-88 in the first quarterfinal.

The Panthers are off to a slow start in the second half, and have lost Thondique, who aggravated an already tender left ankle.
