Castellat puts his best foot forward in Spartans’ win

NORFOLK, Va.- DeAngelo Branche ran for 160 yards and Norfolk State held off North Carolina A&T for a 27-21 victory yesterday.
The Spartans (1-0 MEAC, 2-1) took a 14-7 lead in the second quarter on a 6-yard touchdown run by Takeem Hedgeman. Norfolk State never trailed afterward, scoring again on Justin Castellat's 43-yard field goal and a 22-yard touchdown pass from Dennis Brown to Dario Walker.
Castellat put Norfolk State ahead 27-7 in the third with a 33-yard field goal. The Aggies (2-1, 0-1) cut the lead to 13 in the third when Carlton Fears connected with Giorgio Lowrance on a 17-yard touchdown.
Liberty 19, Western Carolina 16
CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Brock Smith accounted for 181 yards and a touchdown to lead Liberty over Western Carolina.
Smith completed 16 of 26 passes for 154 yards and rushed for a score for the Flames (3-0). Liberty's Rashad Jennings also added 116 yards rushing on 28 carries.
The Liberty defense held the Catamounts to 19 yards rushing and had two fumble recoveries to help seal the victory.
Hampton 38, Howard 27
HAMPTON, Va. - Kevin Teel returned two kickoffs for Touchdowns, and Justin Brown had five catches for 133 yards and two touchdowns to lead Hampton over Howard.
Howard (0-2 MEAC, 0-1) led 7-0 from the 5:32 mark of the first quarter until the Pirates kicked a 19-yard field goal with 6:17 left in the third.
In other games
Josh Simpson totalled 190 yards rushing with four touchdowns for the Tigers (2-0), and quarterback Corey Sedlar was 29 of 38 passing for 424 yards and two touchdowns.
Jamel Mutunga rushed for 115 yards and scored a touchdown for the Bullets (0-2).
Anthony Coredero had two receptions for 54 yards and scored the Hornets' lone touchdown.
Bridgewater (1-1) rallied with an eight-play, 61-yard drive in the closing minutes of the game but the extra point missed wide left.
The Cavs' defense was led by linebacker Chad Hooker, who recorded six tackles, three for losses, and a sack. Josh Spurlock contributed four tackles, two sacks, and a fumble recovery for U.Va.-Wise (2-0).
Sitterson opened a 17-6 lead for Washington and Lee late in the third quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run and scored again in the fourth on a 24-yard carry.
Sewanee (1-1) cut the score to 24-12 on a 33-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Adams from quarterback Patrick Shelton.
