Wilson sets NCAA mark in Wolfpack’s rout

RALEIGH, N.C. - Russell Wilson had four touchdown passes for the second straight week, threw for a career-high 345 yards and set an NCAA passing record in North Carolina State's 45-14 rout of Gardner-Webb last night.

Toney Baker had two early scoring runs before Wilson threw touchdown passes covering 17 and 12 yards to George Bryan, 24 yards to T.J. Graham and 16 yards to Jarvis Williams for the Wolfpack (2-1).

For most of the game, the only question was whether Wilson, a former Collegiate star, would play long enough to break the NCAA record of 325 consecutive passes without an interception, a mark set by Kentucky's Andre Woodson during 2006-07. He entered 32 attempts behind Woodson but surpassed him late in the third quarter with a 13-yard dump-off over the middle to running back James Washington.

Six plays later, Wilson threw his fourth touchdown pass - the strike to Williams that capped his night and extended the pick-free streak to 329.

His 26 completions and 36 attempts were career highs, and he easily sailed past his 279-yard outing in last year's 41-10 upset of North Carolina.

Middle Tenn. 32, Maryland 31

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Alan Gendreau made a 19-yard field goal as time expired and Middle Tennessee rallied past turnover-prone Maryland.

Dwight Dasher completed 27 of 44 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score for the Blue Raiders (2-1). Dasher was 4 for 4 for 69 yards on the decisive drive - an eight-play, 73-yard march - that began with 1:30 left after Maryland's Nick Ferrara went wide right on a 42-yard field goal attempt.

Da'Rel Scott rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown for the Terrapins, but he fumbled twice. Maryland quarterback Chris Turner was 19 for 30 for 288 yards, threw two touchdowns and an interception.

Maryland (1-2) took a 7-0 lead on Scott's 48-yard run 6:66 into the game, but Middle Tennessee converted a pair of Scott turnovers into touchdowns for a 13-7 lead.

Clemson 25, Boston College 7

CLEMSON, S.C. - C.J. Spiller showed more punch on his first punt return than Boston College had throughout the game in Clemson's victory.

Spiller had a 77-yard return score, kicker Richard Jackson added a school record-tying six field goals and Clemson's defense bottled up the Eagles in a game that took nearly five hours to finish because of two rain delays.

Spiller, who finished with 219 all-purpose yards, didn't return after the second stoppage. Athletic spokesman Tim Bourret said Spiller hurt his foot, but the injury was not considered serious.

Boston College (0-1, 2-1) ended with 55 yards. Clemson improved to 1-1, 2-1.

No. 24 UNC 31, East Carolina 17

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - T.J. Yates threw for two touchdowns while freshman receiver Erik Highsmith had a big game to help North Carolina beat East Carolina.

Highsmith had six catches for 113 yards and a score for the Tar Heels, who are off to their first 3-0 start since winning the first eight games in 1997. His big day included a pair of key catches to move the chains on the Tar Heels' clock-draining drive that ended with Ryan Houston's 5-yard score with 1:58 left in the game.

Jheranie Boyd also had a juggling 59-yard touchdown grab for his first collegiate catch, and North Carolina got a solid all-around effort from its young offense to complement another strong performance from its defense.

East Carolina (1-2) got a touchdown catch from Jamar Bryant and a TD run from Dwayne Harris, but finished with just 247 total yards.

Yates completed 19 of 24 passes for 227 yards while spreading the ball around to several receivers.

No. 22 Kansas 44, Duke 16

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Todd Reesing threw three touchdown passes and Maxwell Onyegbule returned an interception 48 yards for another score, enabling Kansas to shake off a sluggish start and beat Duke.

A surprised Kansas (3-0) found itself trailing 7-0 after Thad Lewis engineered a two-play, 87-yard drive on Duke's first possession. The 22-point underdog Blue Devils (1-2) kept it tied 7-all into the second quarter before Reesing began finding his touch.

The senior wound up hitting 28 of 41 passes for 338 yards, the 14th 300-yard day in a career that has erased almost every school passing record. Reesing helped the Jayhawks to their 25th victory in 29 home games.

Dezmon Briscoe had six catches for 117 yards, including a 14-yard TD reception. Kerry Meier stretched out and made a diving catch of Reesing's 6-yard TD pass for a 20-17 lead 76 seconds before halftime, and freshman Toben Opurum scored two touchdowns.

Wake Forest 35, Elon 7

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Riley Skinner threw for a career-high 289 yards and three touchdowns, and Wake Forest tuned up for its conference schedule by beating Elon.

Not that they needed it, but even the officials helped the Demon Deacons (2-1) in the first meeting in 70 years between the neighboring schools.
