FCS roundup: Marriner lifts Tribe to victory

KINGSTON, R.I. -- Courtland Marriner rushed for three touchdowns and William & Mary beat Rhode Island 39-14 yesterday.

Marriner had 93 yards rushing and scored on runs of 9, 16 and 39 yards for the Tribe (4-1 CAA, 7-1).

After the Rams (0-5, 1-7) took a 7-0 lead on a 5-yard pass from Chris Paul-Etienne to Shawn Leonard, the Tribe scored 39 unanswered points. In addition to Marriner's three touchdowns, the Tribe got an 18-yard touchdown run from Terrence Riggins.

Tribe quarterback R.J. Archer went 18 for 23 for 175 yards and a touchdown.

The Tribe set a school record by allowing minus-46 yards rushing on 28 attempts.

The Rams ended the Tribe's scoring streak with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Paul-Etienne to Leonard with 1:29 remaining in the game.

Charleston So. 31, VMI 21

LEXINGTON -- Charleston Southern scored 10 points in the final 6 minutes, capped by B.J. Hackworth's 12-yard run, to beat Virginia Military Institute.

With the game tied 21-21 after three quarters, the Buccaneers (1-2 Big South, 3-5) took the lead on an 18-yard field goal by John Paglia. On VMI's next possession, Andrew McKain intercepted a pass from Kyle Hughes that set up the Buccaneers at the Keydets' 24-yard line. Hackworth scored two plays later.

Antwan Ivey scored on a 2-yard run and a 50-yard punt return for the Buccaneers. A.J. Toscano scored on a 6-yard run and went 19 for 24 for 193 yards passing.

Howard Abegesah ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries for the Keydets (1-3, 2-6).

Hughes rushed for 89 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown. He went 4 for 10 for 55 yards passing.

James Madison 20, Delaware 8

NEWARK, Del. -- Justin Thorpe ran for one touchdown and threw for another while James Madison's defense registered eight sacks in a win over Delaware.

Trailing 3-0 at halftime, the Dukes (1-4 CAA, 3-5) scored all three of its touchdowns in the second half to snap a four-game losing streak and post its first victory at Delaware since 1994.

The Dukes had gone 12 straight quarters without a touchdown before Thorpe scored on a 12-yard run early in the third quarter and then threw a 7-yard scoring pass to Charlie Newman later in the period.

Thorpe went 11 for 15 for 262 yards while rushing for 42 yards on 11 carries. Rockeed McCarter caught three passes for 125 yards.

Delaware's Pat Devlin completed 19 of 42 passes for 215 yards with two interceptions.

The Hens (5-3, 3-3) got a pair of field goals from Jon Striefsky.

Norfolk State 41, Howard 6

NORFOLK -- Dennis Brown threw two touchdowns and ran for another, sparking Norfolk State's rout of Howard.

Brown was 12 for 21 with 226 yards and ran for 66 yards on 12 carries for the Spartans (3-3 MEAC, 4-4). Chris Bell had four catches for 138 yards and two scores. DeAngelo Branche ran for 129 yards on 19 carries.

Floyd Hagler's 30-yard pass to Willie Carter was the only score for the Bison (0-5, 2-6), who took a 6-0 lead with 4:40 left in the first quarter after a blocked extra point.

Brown connected with Bell on touchdown passes of 51 and 64 yards in the first, and Justin Castellat made field goals from 27 and 31 yards away to put the Spartans up 20-6 at halftime.

Brown's 2-yard rushing touchdown, Josh Alford's 1-yard rushing score and Donovan Cotton's 37-yard scamper sealed Norfolk State's scoring in the second half.

Hampton 16, Winston-Salem 13

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Steve Robinson scored on an 11-yard run in overtime as Hampton rallied to defeat Winston-Salem.

The Pirates (4-4) trailed 10-0 with 2:35 left in the third quarter, then forced overtime by scoring 10 unanswered points in the fourth. Isiah Thomas caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from David Legree, followed by Jordan Stovall's 30-yard field goal.

The Rams (1-7) took a 13-10 lead in overtime when Landen Thayer kicked a career-best 46-yard field goal, but Hampton used the same running play over left end four times -- twice by Robinson and twice by LaMarcus Coker -- for the win.

Hampton finished with 263 yards rushing. Coker contributed 109 yards on 28 carries while Robinson had 101 yards on 14 attempts.

Liberty 55, Presbyterian 19

LYNCHBURG -- Andreakis Allen and SirChauncey Holloway each ran for two touchdowns, and Liberty beat Presbyterian.

Holloway, who rushed for 99 yards, scored on runs of 4 and 14 yards. Allen ran for 92 yards, with touchdown runs of 2 and 14 yards.

Tommy Beecher was 15 for 17 with 159 yards passing for the Flames (3-0 Big South, 6-2). Beecher threw touchdown passes of 6 and 8 yards to Will Quarles. Beecher also scored on a 5-yard run.

The Blue Hose (0-5, 0-8) were held without a touchdown until the final nine minutes of the game. Brandon Miley threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Michael Ruff and a 29-yarder to Sean Adegbola.

Presbyterian has lost 11 in a row. The last team the Blue Hose beat was Liberty, 31-28, in the ninth game of the 2008 season. It was the fifth game this season in which Presbyterian allowed at least 40 points.
