NORFOLK -- Dennis Brown ran for three touchdowns and passed for two more yesterday to lead Norfolk State to a 46-6 victory over Hampton.
Brown was 18 of 21 for 229 yards and threw scoring passes of 71 and 4 yards to Chris Bell, who finished with five catches for 108 yards. Brown set a school record by completing 85.7 percent of his passes.
Norfolk State (2-2 MEAC, 3-3) held Hampton (2-2, 3-3) to 88 yards rushing on 33 carries as LaMarcus Coker, the MEAC's leading rusher, tallied only 63 yards on 18 carries.
Liberty 58, Coastal Carolina 13
LYNCHBURG -- Aldreakis Allen ran for three touchdowns as Liberty blasted Coastal Carolina (1-1, 3-3).
It was the 12th straight Big South Conference win for the Flames. The last time the Flames lost in the conference was Oct. 28, 2006, to Coastal Carolina.
Allen rushed for 106 yards and scored on runs of 1, 14 and 13 yards for the Flames (1-0, 4-2). With the game tied at 3 in the first quarter, the Flames went on a 55-3 scoring binge to break open the game.
Stony Brook 27, VMI 20
LEXINGTON -- Conte Cuttino scored a 13-yard touchdown with 52 seconds remaining to lift Stony Brook past VMI.
With 2:56 remaining in the game, the Keydets (0-3 Big South Conference, 1-5) took a 20-19 lead on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Kyle Hughes, who accounted for 47 of VMI's 69 yards on the go-ahead drive.
After Hughes' TD, Stony Brook's Matt Brevi ran the kickoff 31 yards to put the Seawolves (2-0, 3-4) on the VMI 49-yard line.
Michael Coulter then connected with Stephan Towns on three straight passes to set up the game-winning run.
Old Dominion 28, Campbell 17
NORFOLK -- Thomas DeMarco passed for three touchdowns to lead ODU past Campbell (1-5).
DeMarco was 8 for 14 for 145 yards for the Monarchs (5-2). His first scoring pass was 42 yards to Reid Evans, then he had scoring strikes of 14 and 41 yards to Nick Mayers. DeMarco also had 12 carries for 38 yards.
ODU's Desmond Williams added a career-high 145 yards on 29 carries with one TD, a 1-yard run capping a 16-play, 94-yard drive.
