NEW YORK -- Virginia Tech goes into its season-opener ranked seventh in The Associated Press' Top 25, tied for its highest preseason ranking.
The 2005 team also was ranked seventh in preseason.
Defending national champion Florida is ranked No.1 in the poll released yesterday.
The Hokies open with No.5 Alabama on Sept. 5 in Atlanta. Tech's highest regular-season ranking is second, during the 1999 and 2000 seasons.
Texas is ranked second, followed by Oklahoma and Southern California. But Florida is in a class itself as the most overwhelming preseason No.1 in the history of the media poll.
The Gators received 58 of the 60 first-place votes. Texas got the others.
The previous highest percentage of first-place votes for the AP preseason poll, which started in 1950, was 95.4 percent for USC in 2007.
