Wilson a captain for U.S. team in world football tourney

David Wilson, an incoming freshman running back for Virginia Tech's football team, has been named one of the United States' four captains for the inaugural International Federation of American Football Junior World Championship.

Wilson, who attended George Washington High in Danville, is regarded by recruiting Web sites as the best player in Tech's 2009 class. Rivals.com rates him as the nation's fourth-best running back.

The eight-team tournament runs from today through July 5 at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio, home field for the NFL's annual Hall of Fame exhibition game. The event includes 19-and-under squads from Mexico, Canada, New Zealand, Germany, France, Sweden and Japan. Team USA plays France tonight at 8.

The 45-man U.S. roster is composed entirely of players who will be college freshmen this fall. Other players in the game include Virginia Tech linebacker Tariq Edwards and two Virginia recruits: offensive lineman Oday Aboushi and safety Corey Lillard.

Wilson also was named the U.S. team's flag bearer for the opening ceremony. His older brother, Ronald, is in the Navy and stationed in San Diego. - Darryl Slater
