Hokies picked to keep crown
The ACC media yesterday tabbed Virginia Tech as an overwhelming favorite to win its second consecutive conference title.
The Hokies received 78 of 87 votes to win the Coastal Division and 69 to win the championship game. Florida State, the media's pick to win the Atlantic Division, received seven votes to win the title game. Georgia Tech, which got nine votes to take the Coastal, also received seven to win the title game.
Of the 33 preseason polls the ACC has conducted, the media have correctly picked the champion 19 times. Two other times, the media's pick was a co-champion. In 2007, the Hokies fulfilled the media's pick by winning the title. Last season, the media picked Clemson, which went 7-6, 4-4 in the league.
Many observers view the Hokies as contenders to win their first national title. They played in the Orange Bowl the past two seasons and appeared in the Sugar Bowl after the 2004 season. After the 1999 season, they lost to Florida State in their only national-title game.
