QUICK KICKS Score: No.11 Virginia Tech 31, No.9 Miami 7 For starters: Tech dominated the first half, after which it led 21-0. The Hokies outgained Miami 242-54 and led 18:05-11:55 in time of possession. Four of Miami's six drives went three plays and out. Another ended with rover Dorian Porch hitting quarterback Jacory Harris, who fumbled the ball, which Tech recovered at Miami's 11-yard line. The Hokies cashed in the turnover for their first touchdown. Turning point: The Hokies went up 21-0 after sophomore cornerback Jacob Sykes laid out to block a punt. Matt Reidy scooped up the ball at the goal line and walked into the end zone. Before yesterday, Sykes had played two snaps this season - both on special teams. Star of the game: Ryan Williams. The Hokies ran 64 plays. Williams, a redshirt freshman tailback, carried 34 times for 150 yards - just what Tech needed on a rainy day. He also had two catches for 40 yards and ran for two touchdowns. Big picture: The upcoming schedule sets up nicely for the Hokies (1-0 ACC, 3-1). They play at hapless Duke next Saturday, then host Boston College on Oct. 10. The Eagles (1-1, 3-1) don't seem as daunting of a challenge as they have been in recent years. Go figure: 3 - Number of times Tech sacked Harris. The Hokies also had three quarterback hurries. In Miami's first two games this season, Harris had been sacked once and hadn't been hurried at all. Next: After playing three tough opponents in their first four games - Alabama, Nebraska and Miami - the Hokies face an easier opponent next Saturday when they travel to Duke for a noon game that will air on ESPN360.com. Tech has won eight consecutive games against the Blue Devils dating to 1981.
