The honorees

COACH
Frank Jones (1966-73): Southern Conference coach of the year three times; made struggling Spiders a winner.
DEFENSIVE LINE
Ace Owens (1972-74): Known for bouncing off blockers; named all-Southern Conference and all-state.
Marc Megna (1994-98): Won the 1998 Dudley Award, given to the state of Virginia's finest college player, played in NFL.
Lawrence Sidbury (2004-08): Had 20.5 collegiate sacks, helped UR capture 2008 FCS championship, plays for Atlanta Falcons.
Dick Humbert (1938-40): All-state choice went on to solid career in the NFL, then returned to UR as a professor.
LINEBACKERS
Eric Johnson (1989-92): Made 643 career tackles, about 200 more than any one else in program history.
Shawn Barber (1994-97): A-10 defensive player of the year in 1997; Hermitage High grad also played in the NFL.
Pat Kelly (1971-73): Three-time all-Southern Conference choice was known as one of UR's toughest players.
DEFENSIVE BACKS
Jeff Nixon (1975-77): Holds career interception record (23), and went on to solid career with Buffalo Bills.
Brian Jordan (1986-88): First-team all-Yankee Conference as a junior and senior; played for Atlanta Falcons.
Ray Easterling (1969-71): Collegiate alumnus was all-Southern Conference 1970-71; played for Atlanta Falcons.
David Ames (1955-57): Starred at DB, punter, punt returner and halfback; known for deceptive speed.
OFFENSIVE LINE
Red Christman (1959-61): Spiders' center was regarded as one of the Southern Conference's best blockers.
Ray Tate (1964-65): Patrick Henry High grad was all-Southern Conference and all-State as a senior.
Eddie Martin (1982-84): Big, quick blocker was a four-year starter who was named an All-American as a senior.
Wayne Fowler (1968-69): Earned all-Southern Conference recognition as a junior and senior.
Chuck Boone (1956-60): All-star in football and baseball, also coached Spiders' baseball and was school's AD.
WIDE RECEIVERS
Walker Gillette (1967-69): "The Blade" was a consensus All-American; 22 TD catches are UR record, solid NFL career.
Leland Melvin (1982-85): Caught at least one pass in each of 39 games played; became NASA astronaut.
TIGHT END
John Hilton (1961-62,'64): Richmond native was three times an all-state selection, then played and coached in NFL.
RUNNING BACKS
Barry Redden (1978-81): Third-leading rusher in the nation as a senior; played for three teams during eight NFL seasons.
Tim Hightower (2004-07): Holds program record for career rushing yards (3,712); plays for the Arizona Cardinals.
FULLBACK
Barty Smith (1971-73): Threw crushing blocks and ran with power, but also had speed; played for the Green Bay Packers.
QUARTERBACK
Buster O'Brien (1966-68): Led Spiders to 1968 Tangerine Bowl triumph with school-record 39 completions vs. Ohio.
PUNTER
Mike Bragg (1965-67): Averaged 41.9 yards during career, four punts covered more than 70 yards; played for Redskins.
KICKER
Rob Courter (1987-90): No one in 127 years of UR football history converted more field goals than his 41.
RETURN SPECIALISTS
Winston October (1994-98): Captain on 1998 A-10 title team gained more than 1,000 career yards in punt returns.
Jesse Williams (1977-79): Played RB and WR but used world-class speed to best advantage as KO returner.
