Quick Kicks

QUICK KICKS Score: Virginia 47, Indiana 7 For starters: Virginia set a blistering pace with 14 points in the first six minutes, though the game settled down after that. Turning point: When Virginia was able to shut down the Indiana passing attack, it became evident it would be a long day for the Hoosiers. They're not a rushing team, and their best back, Darius Willis, was injured and did not play. Star of the game: Cornerback Ras-I Dowling was disruptive in the secondary, forcing a fumble, intercepting a pass and logging a key third-down sack near the end of the first half. Big picture: With a winnable game Saturday against Maryland, it's possible the Cavs could be 3-0 in ACC play. It also puts them one step closer to the six wins needed for bowl play -- though that's still a ways away. Go figure: 536 -- Yards of total offense, the most for Virginia since 2004. Next: Virginia heads to Maryland for a 4 p.m. game Saturday that will be televised by ESPNU.

Virginia ------------------------- 14 16 14 3 -- 47
First Quarter

UVA -- Simpson 5 run (Jarrett kick). Drive: 4 plays, 38 yards, 0:42. Key play: Ras-I Dowling hit Terrance Turner on a reception, forcing a fumble that was returned by Rodney McLeod into Indiana territory.

UVA -- Hall 21 pass from Sewell (Jarrett kick). Drive: 5 plays, 68 yards, 1:15. Key play: Jameel Sewell goes long to Kris Burd for a 31-yard completion that kick-starts the drive and stretches the field.

Second Quarter

UVA -- Simpson 5 run (Jarrett kick). Drive: 2 plays, 42 yards, 0:24. Key play: Ras-I Dowling strikes again with an interception created when Zane Parr makes a swim move to get by Will Matte and hurry the quarterback. Simpson caught a 37-yard pass on the drive's only other play.

UVA -- Simpson 3 run (run fails). Drive: 8 plays, 54 yards, 2:29. Key play: Mikell Simpson runs off the right tackle, a winning formula that creates another touchdown for the Cavs. Instead of an extra point, Drew Jarrett attempts a run that fails.

UVA -- FG Randolph 37. Drive: 7 plays, 63 yards, 1:38. Key play: Rashawn Jackson gets a 31-yard completion, with most of it yards after the catch, and Jameel Sewell scrambles for 22 yards as Virginia finishes the half with 30 points.

Third Quarter

UVA -- Simpson 1 run (Jarrett kick). Drive: 9 plays, 64 yards, 3:28. Key play: Coming out of the locker room, Virginia is intent on maintaining control of the game with a length-of-the-field drive that is assisted by an Indiana facemask. Mikell Simpson has fewer than 50 yards at this point, but has been a big factor on the goal line.

UVA -- Sewell 1 run (Jarrett kick). Drive: 12 plays, 77 yards, 4:27. Key play: The drive had a cloud cast over it when Mikell Simpson went down with an injury and had to be carted off the field. Torrey Mack filled in for Simpson's carries the remainder of the drive.

Fourth Quarter

UVA -- Randolph FG 31. Drive: 10 plays, 6 yards, 4:55. Key play: Randolph continues a recent hot streak by making his second field goal of the game -- he's 5 for 5 the past two games, with distance to spare on all of them.

IU -- Payton 12 run. Drive: 3 plays, 36 yards, 1:02. Key play: Indiana prevents U.Va. from getting the shutout.
