MORE W&M loses showdown with Villanova PAUL WOODY Tribe can match up -- if it makes the playoffs |
VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Every statistic said "William and Mary."
The scoreboard said, "Villanova."
The William and Mary football team had more first downs than Villanova, 27 to 15, ran more plays than Villanova, 86 to 52, and had more total yards than the Wildcats, 472 to 283. But Villanova had more points and claimed a 28-17 victory between two nationally ranked Colonial Athletic Association squads yesterday.
Villanova, ranked No. 2, scored a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage of the first quarter and the first play of the second quarter. The Wildcats' defense did give up plenty of yards, but when the Tribe reached the red zone, the Villanova defense got red hot.
"We didn't break," said Villanova coach Andy Talley. "We held them to three field goals when they could have put touchdowns in there."
William and Mary, ranked No. 5 entering the game, gave up a touchdown on Villanova's first play from scrimmage. The Wildcats lined up in a wildcat formation, and the direct snap went to wide receiver Matt Szczur.
Szczur then tossed the ball back to quarterback Chris Whitley, who found wide receiver Brandyn Harvey uncovered deep down the field for a 57-yard touchdown play.
Asked if his defense was caught flat-footed on the play, William and Mary coach Jimmye Laycock said, "It was pretty obvious we were, wasn't it? I hope we were. I hope that wasn't the way we were supposed to play it.
"We should be ready. You always coach them up to be ready on the first play of the ballgame for something tricky. Our guys weren't ready for it."
The Tribe was on the verge of making up for that opening play late in the first quarter. On third and goal at the Villanova 8, quarterback R.J. Archer's pass into the corner of the end zone was tipped by safety Fred Maldonado then intercepted by linebacker Marquis Kirkland.
Four-and-a-half minutes later, the Wildcats converted that turnover into a touchdown for a 14-0 lead.
