Generals’ QB calls a rout
DINWIDDIE - Terron Adams looked confused by the question."Who calls in our audibles?" the Dinwiddie receiver asked back. "Nah, that's just Adam."
Adam Morgan, Dinwiddie's quarterback, not only has arm strength but backs it up with intelligence.
He's Peyton Manning on the line, calling off audibles when he sees a blitz and adjusting his receivers' routes on the fly. And unlike most high schools and some colleges, there's no coach behind the curtain.
"He makes all the line calls," coach Billy Mills said. "We watch tape together three times a week, and then he takes some more home."
Morgan had all the right calls last night, leading the Generals to a 54-0 shutout of the Matoaca Warriors. After racking up 278 yards and four touchdowns in the first half, he sat out the rest of the game.
And while Dinwiddie did some running, the offense focuses on Morgan and his talented array of receivers, five of whom pulled in at least 35 yards of receiving last night.
"I do have freedom," he said. "We do a lot of study during the week, go over the films, and look at which defensive fronts I'm going to see."
This week, he got a bonus three days to study since the game, originally scheduled for Friday, was moved because of rain. Last night, he sat down with his dad to brush up for the game.
Morgan is part of a family legacy at Dinwiddie that includes his brother Aaron and his dad, Todd, a baseball player who went on to pitch at Florida State.
During the spring, Morgan works the other side of the plate as a catcher, a position where the role is similar to that of the quarterback - calling the game.
"You're behind everybody, looking out and seeing everything," he said. "But you get lots of credit as a quarterback, probably more than you need."
He is quick to note the work of his offensive line, which makes sure he has plenty of time in the pocket, as well as the receiving corps that finds its way open more often than not. Matoaca (2-2) struggled to cover four options on every play.
Last night, the Generals (3-1)stepped up big on defense as well. Deonte Chambliss picked up two fumbles, the second after rains began to fall in the second half. Chambliss' counterpart at defensive tackle, Corey Marshall, also had a big game with a sack and a handful of tackles - and he's just a sophomore.
"Corey Marshall is making a name for himself," Mills said. "We've got some great talent up front."
