High school notes: Springers host flag football
Springers' happenings
The Highland Springs High Touchdown Club is sponsoring an inaugural Family Community Day Extravaganza on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the school.
The featured activities are an alumni flag football game at 12:30 and a game between members of the 2003 and 2007 state basketball champion teams at 2.
In addition, there will be food, a car show, health fair, face painting, a moon bounce and performances by the Springers' Step teams.
The Springers' football team opens its season tomorrow night at home at 7 against Meadowbrook in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic. This is the first regular-season meeting between the schools. The Monarchs nipped the Springers 23-21 in a Division 6 playoff game in 2005.
Highland Springs is ranked No. 2 in the Times-Dispatch preseason top 10; Meadowbrook is No. 6.
Before the game, Highland Springs' 1970 state champion baseball team will be honored.
Next week, the spotlight will shine on the Springers' 1961 state title-winning football team prior to the Douglas Freeman game.
Postseason golf venues
The golf season continues to move toward a mid-October conclusion.
The Central Region tournament is Oct. 5-6 at Jefferson-Lakeside Country Club and Stonehenge Country Club.
The state Group AAA tournament, held at Independence GC in Midlothian last year, will be played at Waterfront Country Club at Smith Mountain Lake Oct. 19-20. Independence plays host to the Group A state event Oct. 19-20, and Group AA teams and individuals gather at Williamsburg National in Williamsburg Oct. 12-13.
The battle for the Colonial District's automatic region berth took a turn after reigning Central Region champion Deep Run won the district mini-tournament. The Wildcats defeated runner-up Mills Godwin by 14 shots in the mini-tourney, but the Eagles turned the tables and won a dual match at Hermitage Country Club four days later. Mills Godwin finished four shots ahead even though Deep Run's Jason Schumacher (1-under 71) was the only player to break par.
