Warriors' hopes rise with addition

Henrico boys basketball coaches and players were happy to see the second semester begin.

Justin Coleman, a 6-4 junior transfer from Louisa, would become eligible. The anticipation was palpable even though he would play just four regular-season games and into the playoffs. The Warriors are second in the Capital District behind Highland Springs.

"He will provide some depth to our interior and a physical presence," Henrico coach Vance Harmon said. "He has a 36-inch vertical leap. Trying to blend him into our system is the challenging part."

Coleman's debut came in a victory over Lee-Davis. He contributed 21 points and 15 rebounds and "did some freakish, non-high school dunks," assistant coach Walt Atwell said.

He had 17 points and eight rebounds against Armstrong.

Bentley moves up Lancers' scoring list

Porche Bentley has joined some pretty good company on Manchester's girls basketball career-scoring list. Bentley surpassed the 1,000-point milestone in January and continues to add to her total in bunches.

She is the fourth Manchester girl to pass 1,000 career points in five seasons. Jessica Naquin (Class of 2005) and 2006 graduates Lindsey Biggs and Melanie Oliver are the other three. Biggs, currently playing at Virginia Tech, is the school's leading scorer with 1,662 points. She also holds the single-season scoring mark of 539 points.

Bentley transferred to Manchester after spending her freshman year at Hampton, where she scored 221 points. A 5-9 natural forward, she has had to play center for the Lancers. Through Feb. 5, she has recorded 441 points and could pass Biggs' single-season standard.

Bentley set a single-game scoring mark when she posted 43 points against Huguenot Feb. 2. She equaled the previous mark of 35 (Cindy Martz in 1982) against Monacan 10 days earlier.

Knee injury ends Wilson's senior year

Juan Wilson expected to be dressed in a Huguenot basketball uniform instead of street clothes for senior night Wednesday against L.C. Bird.

Wilson, a 6-5 swingman who transferred to Huguenot from Thomas Jefferson, was the Falcons' leading scorer when he went down with a knee injury in the sixth game of the season. He missed seven games before returning for four games in late January, but the knee gave out again against Monacan.

Wilson walked onto the Huguenot floor Wednesday night for the seniors ceremony, then had surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament yesterday.

Huguenot coach Bo Jones Sr. spoke with emotion about the loss of Wilson.

"That's in the game," Jones said. "It took the guys about a month to realize a tremendous high school player wouldn't be back."

The Falcons beat L.C. Bird to take over first place in the Dominion District, but they have to beat Cosby at Cosby tonight to clinch first.
