Saints earn tennis title

CHARLOTTESVILLE - St. Catherine's took home the LIS Division I girls tennis title for the second consecutive year and finished out the season undefeated in the conference both this year and last.

No. 1 singles player Callie Whitlock, No. 2 singles Anne Garland and No. 4 singles Allie Gullquist were all undefeated in each of their matches this season, and Whitlock and Garland were unbeaten in doubles.

St. Catherine's is ranked No. 1 in Virginia, followed by No. 2 Collegiate. The state tournament will be played next week in Richmond.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Colonial District

Lucas Saunders had 11 kills and three aces and Phil Slocum recorded 42 assists in top-seeded Deep Run's 3-0 victory over J.R. Tucker in the Colonial District boys volleyball final. Patrick Maloney added 16 kills for the Wildcats.

Matt Campfield led the way for the No. 2 Tigers with nine kills and three digs. Trois Jeter totaled eights kills and a block and Scott Froede put up 21 assists.

Colonial District

Deirdre Gill scored the only goal of the game during overtime as No. 1 Maggie Walker GS defeated third-seeded Deep Run in the Colonial District championship.

Virginia Young's two saves for the Green Dragons helped preserve the shutout.

Central District

Kalia Johnson had 17 kills, three blocks and five digs in Thomas Dale's 3-2 victory over Colonial Heights in the championship. Christian Garland added seven kills, six digs, three assists and two blocks and Brittany Philiben had 11 assists, seven kills and five digs for the top-seeded Knights.

Nicole Kelly totaled eight digs and two aces for the No. 2 Colonials, Lindsey Bauer (12 assists, 4 digs, 2 aces) and Savannah Phillingane (4 digs, 8 kills) also contributed.

Amy Duncan and Caroline Bryan (two blocks) each had four kills but it wasn't enough as No. 4 Richmond Christian fell to No. 1 Southampton in the VCC tournament semifinals.
