Region ace Dix eyes state championship

CHESAPEAKE -- Rapids' Dix advances to wrestling semifinals

For the first time, Jordan Dix leads James River into the semifinals of the Group AAA wrestling tournament at Oscar Smith High School.

The 130-pound senior has placed before, even taking fifth last year. But for the first time in his career, the three-time Central Region champion advances to the state semifinals -- one win away from the championship match.

"I'm always a little nervous," Dix said. "But coach [Mark] Helberg says it's OK to be nervous, it just shows you care."

Dix is one of eight Central Region wrestlers still working toward a 2009 state title. James River, the region champion, and runner-up Hanover each advanced four wrestlers to the quarterfinals. Dix put together an 8-4 win over Charlie Vannoy of Robinson. James River 135-pound senior Jared Anongos, a four-time region champion who placed third last year at 130, also remains in the hunt for his first state title.

Hanover' Spencer Alexander (103) remains

Rapids heavyweight Ryan Powis, who placed fourth in the region tournament, won 3-2 over Northern Region champion Chris Cabe in his first match. But Powis slipped into the consolation bracket with a quarterfinal loss to Vicquan Arrington of Nansemond River, the third-place winner out of the Eastern Region.

Mills Godwin is the only other Central Region team with multiple wrestlers in the semifinals. Seniors Matt Brunke (152) and Matt Hatcher (140) won in the quarterfinals.

A Group AAA rematch of the Central Region 145-pound final still is a possibility as Hopewell freshman Cody Allala and Matoaca sophomore Blake Roulo marched through the first day. Roulo placed third at 135 as a freshman, losing in the semifinals to eventual state champion Ben Dorsay. Allala has won all four meetings this season, including the Central District and Central Region finals.

"I'll probably have a little bit of memories of last year," Roulo said. "But it's not the same Blue Roulo who was like, 'Oh, cool, I'm in the semifinals.'"

The largest margin of victory between the two young standouts was four points in the region championship. While he's still focusing on the match at hand, Roulo admitted he's feeling outside pressure to make a fifth meeting with the younger Allala happen.

"This year, I basically have to be in the finals," he said. "It's supposed to be me and Cody in the finals."

Roulo's teammate Josh Clark lost his quarterfinal match on a stalling call in overtime.
