HIGH SCHOOL NOTES: Passing teams opt for overland route
Passing teams opt for overland route
Football teams that like to throw the ball turned to ground games last week and were successful with the wrinkle.
Trinity Episcopal averaged more than 39 pass attempts a game its first six games. Titans quarterback Will White threw just 17 times Saturday in a 36-7 victory over the Potomac School. He completed 10 for 105 yards and two touchdowns to boost his season statistics to 1,512 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Johnny Hammond (14 carries, 174 yards, three TDs) led a rushing attack that rolled up 258 yards, the most for a Trinity Episcopal team since football resumed at the school in 2005. The Titans had rushed for a total of 346 yards in their first six games.
Clover Hill rushed for 311 yards in a 40-24 Dominion District victory over Midlothian. Michael Haynes led the way with 141 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries. Quarterback Josh Bailey, who has passed for 1,495 yards and 20 TDs, rushed for 100 yards.
Fleming's move good for Saints
St. Christopher's running back Kurt Fleming had a big day in the Saints' 45-21 road victory over Bishop Ireton. Fleming (6-0, 203-pound junior) ran for 294 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries, his most productive game as a Saint.
A year ago, Fleming was carrying the ball for Louisa County. He weighed private school options and made the decision to come to St. Christopher's in July. He also plays baseball.
The 294-yard game ranks second on the Saints' records list. Thomas Hovis rushed for 311 yards vs. Collegiate in 2004.
The victory over Bishop Ireton was "our most complete game of the year," coach Paul Padalino said. "We played well in all three phases and avoided turnovers and penalties, which have hurt us in prior games."
Disciples invited to national playoff
The Central Virginia Homeschool Disciples are undefeated (7-0) going into their final home game tomorrow (1 p.m. behind Carver Middle School in Ettrick) against the Fairfax Kings. The game was scheduled for Sept. 6, but bad weather led to a postponement.
The Disciples are closing in on the Mid-Atlantic Christian Conference championship in their fourth season. They have been invited to play in the first National Homeschool Football Championship Tournament on Nov. 19-23 in Panama City, Fla.
O'Connell second in Group A golf
An extra hole was necessary to decide the individual champion in the state Group A golf tournament at Clear Creek Golf Club in Bristol earlier this week.
Zach Hall of Northumberland and Rick O'Connell of Goochland finished the 36-hole tournament with 7-over par scores of 149. Hall won the playoff on the first hole.
Hall shot 76-73. He trailed O'Connell (75-74) and Austin Evans of Washington & Lee after the first round.
O'Connell was selected to The Times-Dispatch All-Metro team last year as a sophomore after he tied for fourth in the state tournament.
