Benedictine surges to victory on late rally

Marc Rosen hit an RBI single and Mike Goldberg drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to tie the game in the seventh inning and keep Benedictine alive, giving the Cadets a 6-2 win over St. Anne's-Belfield in the quarterfinals of the VIS Divison I tournament yesterday.

The Cadets then came in full force in the eighth, with Rosen getting another RBI single, Will Swoope hitting 2-run triple and Teddy Kozak following with an RBI single. Pitcher Derek Bushey closed out the inning, holding the Saints to just one hit.

Benedictine will face St. Christopher's tomorrow night at Petersburg Sports Complex.

VIS Division II

J.T. Wauford struck out 12 in six innings, gave up just three hits -- two of which were bunt singles -- and hit 93 mph on the radar gun in leading Steward 6-0 over Seton School.

Wauford also hit a double and scored a run, Ryan Burgess hit a two-run homerun in the 5th, and Brock Shiflett hit a solo homer in his first at-bat, scored twice and was twice intentionally walked.

Steward will face the winner of Covenant and Cape Henry Collegiateon Friday at 4 p.m. at the Petersburg Sports Complex.

VIS Division III

Connor Paul pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts and hit the game-winning two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Blessed Sacrament defeated Isle of Wight Academy 8-6.

Chris Howard was 2 for 3 with a homer and drove in three, and Ryan Bendele was 1 for 1 with a triple and scored four runs for the Knights. Jeremy Davenport finished 2 for 3 with three RBI and a home run, and Zack Lamb went 2 for 4 and scored a run for Isle of Wight.

The Knights will face the winner of Carlisle-Southampton Academy in the semifinals Friday at 1 p.m. at Petersburg Sports Complex.

In another tournament game, Bryson Stump hit a three-run home run in the first inning and again in the third to lift Kenston Forest over Alliance Christian 10-6.

C.J. Newcombe (double) and Garrett Martin each went 2 for 3 with two RBI, and Orrey Lloyd and Aaron Williams each finished 2 for 4 for Kenston Forest.

FAIRFAX -- T'Keyah Vaughan hit the game-winning RBI single in the seventh inning to lead Collegiate past Paul VI 4-3.

Caroline Diemer had two hits and scored twice for the Cougars, and Caitlin Gaffney hit a homerun. Hillary Zell was 3 for 3, and Emily Flippo went 2 for 4 for Collegiate. Paul VI's Elisa Marino struck out nine.

Collegiate will play tomorrow against the St. Catherine's-Potomac winner at 5 p.m. at Petersburg Sports Complex.

Eva Watson drove in two runs and Hailey Piercy scored three times and knocked in a run for Kenston Forest, which advanced to tomorrow's semifinal against Isle of Wight Academy at 1 p.m. at the Petersburg Sports Complex.

Central Region

Top-seeded Deep Run won its opening match in the quarterfinals of the Central Region boys' team tournament. The Wildcats defeated Midlothian 5-1 in the singles portion of the match. Likewise, Mills Godwin blanked Cosby in its opening match.

Atlee, the top seed from the Capital District, disposed of Thomas Dale in its quarterfinal. All five Raiders' winners won in straight sets. Atlee meets top-ranked Deep Run in tomorrow's semifinal at Cosby.

Henrico, the No. 2 team out of the Capital District and competing in the region tournament for the first time in years, blanked Prince George 9-0. The Warriors meet Mills Godwin tomorrow.

Becky Patton scored three goals to lead Collegiate 5-1 over Highland in the quarterfinal round of the tournament. Mollie Bisger and Julia Sroba added a goal apiece for the Cougars. Caitlin Howard scored Highland's lone goal.

Collegiate will play Bishop Sullivan in the semifinals Friday at 3 p.m.

In another quarterfinal match, Fifth-seeded Seton continued its unbeaten season by defeating fourth-seeded Trinity Episcopal 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the tournament. Seton's one tie was against the Titans in the regular season. Despite taking more shots than Seton, Trinity was unable to duplicate its regular-season performance.

Seton advances to play the winner of Norfolk Academy-Cape Henry Collegiate on Friday at St. Catherine's. Trinity Episcopal's season ends with the winningest record in school history.
