Henrico Holiday Hoops final

Both scrappy teams, Meadowbrook and Hermitage fought hard all night, sacrificing bodies slamming into walls, chairs, doors and the scoring table and risking fouls.

But in the final six minutes, the Monarchs pulled ahead for a 69-54 victory in the Henrico Holiday Hoops tournament final last night at Henrico High School.

For the first three quarters, the Monarchs (6-1) didn't put the game away and the Panthers didn't fall out of contention. Hermitage (5-5) closed to 47-43 with 6 minutes left, but in the next 30 seconds, Meadowbrook, with the aid of a blocked shot and quick turnovers, took a 53-43 lead. The Monarchs stayed in control thereafter.

"I was surprised we were able to maintain our pressure," said Meadowbrook coach Ksaan Brown. "They were the first team to stand up to our pressure like that. I'm impressed with the Hermitage team."

The Panthers began the half trailing 32-22, but outscored Meadowbrook 21-15 during the next 10 minutes to close the gap before the Monarchs stopped the surge.

"It was huge," Hermitage coach Joe Coulter said. "We fought back and then they got some run-outs on us."

In the first half, starter Sterling Martin kept the Monarchs ahead. He scored 15 of his 17 points in the second quarter. Meadowbrook got a big boost off the bench in the second half, with Doug Brewer scoring all of his 17 points in the final 16 minutes -- 14 in the fourth quarter.

As the Panthers fell back, they tried to slow the game by fouling, but the Monarchs hit 7 of 11 free throws in the final quarter. Hermitage could not catch up.

The Panthers were led by Micah Thomas with 15 points and Herman Kinard with 12.

Meadowbrook's Andrew Simmons was named tournament MVP. He scored 10 points for the Monarchs in the title game.
