Skyhawks hold off Monarchs

Darryl Johnston scored 11 first-quarter points and Ken Pankey's hot shooting did the rest for L.C. Bird, ranked No. 4 in the Times-Dispatch Top 10 Poll, in a 78-67 nondistrict victory over ninth-ranked Meadowbrook last night.
Johnston finished with 17 points and his early offense staked the Skyhawks to a 10-point lead after one quarter. Pankey took it from there, scoring a game-high 29 points, hitting 11 of 14 shots, 4 of 6 from the 3-point line and 5 of 6 from the foul line. Rico Ferguson also hit double figures for the Skyhawks who led by 20 at halftime and cruised home.
Andrew Simmons scored 21 points to lead the Monarchs, with Sterling Martin chipping in 14 points and Andre Coble adding 13.

Brothers scored 12 in the first half and Moody 10, when Benedictine shot 62 percent from the field (20 of 32) en route to a 47-19 lead. Robert Thurston added 13 points and eight rebounds, and R.J. Price (12) and Kevin Gill (10) also produced double-digit offense.
Jeremy Gross scored 11 of Clover Hills' first-half points and finished with 13.
