L.C. Birds girls defeat Meadowbrook during first-round action in the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament.Ruthanne Doherty scored 10 second-quarter points and helped key a dominant defensive effort that gave third-ranked L.C. Bird a 43-33 win over sixth-ranked Meadowbrook in last night's first round of the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament.
Doherty's outburst sparked a 17-7 second quarter that put L.C. Bird in control for good. Doherty finished with 14 points, 16 rebounds and three steals. Barbara Sitton had five of L.C. Bird's 16 steals.
Courtney Coleman led Meadowbrook with 10 points.
Bird will face Atlee at 3:30 and Cosby will face Deep Run at 5 in today's semifinals at the Siegel Center.

Sarah Price tallied 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds to help lead Deep Run over Highland Springs. Amy Turner snagged five rebounds and four steals to accompany her 14 points in the Wildcats' win.
Kyra Coleman notched 15 points and 13 rebounds, and DaShan Ross recorded nine rebounds for the Springers.

Atlee's Britt Hill scored 18 points and nabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Raiders past Clover Hill. Her night's work also included seven steals and four assists. Atlee's Richelle Price also turned in a strong performace that included 12 points and 17 rebounds.
Brittany Carlisle had seven points, including a 3-pointer, for Clover Hill.
