Field hockey: Central District tournament
PRINCE GEORGE -- Regular-season champion Thomas Dale got two goals from Hannah Robbins to defeat fourth-seeded Hopewell 2-0 in the semifinals of the Central District field hockey tournament yesterday.
Thomas Dale, the defending district and Central Region champion, will meet third-seeded Matoaca in today's 4 p.m. final at Prince George. Matoaca advanced with a 2-1 victory over the hosts.
The Knights peppered Blue Devils keeper Courtney Granderson with shots throughout. Granderson had 15 saves. Thomas Dale keeper Savanah Cummings had two saves.
The Knights advanced to the finals to face Matoaca today.Matoaca's Keegan Bruckner scored the game-winning goal with 18 minutes left, and the Warriors held on for the victory.
Matoaca gave up eight goals in two losses to the Royals during the regular season.
The Warriors, playing aggressively and tenaciously, scored in the first five minutes on a goal by Taylor Rotsted. The Royals' Katy Cash tied it quickly but were kept from scoring again by Warriors keeper Mary Beth Danaher, who logged 15 saves.
