Eagles win hockey title

Hayley Stough scored once in each half to lift third-seeded Mills Godwin to a 2-1 victory over Maggie Walker GS in the Colonial District tournament yesterday at Maggie Walker.
It's the first time a team other than Maggie Walker has won the district tournament. The Eagles are just the second district team to beat the Green Dragons. Mills Godwin beat the No. 2 (Douglas Freeman) and No. 1 seeds to win.
Erin Bailey had eight saves for the Eagles.
Cassie Turnage scored for the Green Dragons, and Virginia Young and Caitlin Riblett combined to stop four shots.

Haley Matthews of Lee-Davis scored what turned out to be the winning goal in the first half as the Confederates captured the Capital District field hockey tournament final with a 2-1 victory over Atlee at Henrico.
The loss was the Raiders' first to a district opponent this season although Atlee had a tie with Hanover.
Amy Wingfield scored Lee-Davis's first goal. Laura Beckler tallied for the Raiders. All the goals were scored in the first half.
Confederates keeper Sarah Clare collected 14 saves. Annie Lassiter had eight for Atlee.

Matoaca 0
Three-time defending Central Region champion Thomas Dale will have a shot at four in a row after whipping Matoaca 5-0 in the Central District tournament final at Prince George.
Ashley Hedge scored the Knights' first two goals. Hannah Robbins contributed the remaining three. Matoaca goal keeper Mary Beth Danaher had her hands full against the aggressive Knights and was credited with 11 saves.
Matoaca had only a few shots against Thomas Dale keeper Savannah Cummings, who logged four saves.

CROSS COUNTRY
Dominion District
Ted Richardson of James River and Kathleen Lautzenheiser of Midlothian won the Dominion District boys and girls cross country races at Pocahontas State Park, and Midlothian, as usual, won the team titles.
Richardson covered the 5K course in 15:28. Evan Niciphor of Cosby was second, 15 seconds behind. Darren Barlow of Midlothian was third in 16:13. James River was second in the team tally.
Lautzenheiser finished in 18:14, 12 seconds clear of Cosby's Megan Moye. Six Trojans finished in the top 10. Cosby was second in the team standings.
