Knights roll to easy win

POWHATAN - As the steady mist fell through the finger-numbing air at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot last night, Mike Henderson assembled his charges and gave his honest assessment of their 46-18 victory over Fuqua.

"It wasn't pretty," the veteran coach said, "but we played hard.

"We always play hard."

The Falcons might debate him on the "wasn't pretty" part.

They would offer no argument with the rest.

In a key matchup in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference, the visitors from Farmville capitalized on two early mistakes - pass interference on fourth and 18 that two plays later led to a 21-yard touchdown pass from Charles Williams to Kyri Washington, and a fumble which Williams returned 98 yards for a score - to go up 12-0 late in the first period.

From there, the Knights (3-0, 6-1) simply dominated, running off 39 straight points and using their take-no-prisoners 3-5-3 defense to hold Williams and crew at bay.

"They're just a lot better than we are," said Fuqua coach Lewis "Skeeter" Fore.

Deon Watts lit up the Falcons (3-2, 6-2) with 240 yards and five touchdowns on 19 carries.

"The line was blocking really well," said the 5-11, 185-pound junior. "I just tried to cut off their blocks.

"Sweeps and the [isolation] were working really, really well. [The Falcons] were trying to overload the sides, so that just opened up the cutback lanes for me."

By the break, the Knights led 19-12, thanks to Watts' first two TDs and a 40-yard scoring connection from quarterback Austin Wingfield to Trevor Gilliam.

They went up 25-12 at 7:20 of the third quarter when Watts ended an eight-play, 49-yard drive with a 4-yard TD run. A 17-yard Wingfield-to-Chris Howard pass increased their advantage to 32-12 on their next series.

Watts scored on runs of 5 and 37 yards in the fourth quarter. The Falcons' final points came when Williams ran 64 yards 2:47 from the end.

The Knights amassed 540 yards of offense, 441 by land and 99 by air, and recorded 21 first downs.

The Falcons managed 175 yards rushing and 45 passing, but 47 yards came on their first scoring drive and 106 came in the final quarter when the outcome had been decided.

BSH, No. 6 in the Virginia Independent Schools Division III poll, stopped two drives with interceptions and stopped No. 4 Fuqua nine times for losses.

"We had guys coming off the outside all over the place," said Howard, a 5-9, 157-pound senior linebacker. "We have so much speed.

"We just hit the gaps the fast as we can and get in there. We took every play one by one. That's all you can do."
