Shawne Alston took the first Phoebus handoff before snow started to fall in Lane Stadium. The first drive was supposed to be a statement.
"You can't stop the run," he said. "You can't stop us."
Alston ran for 11 yards and a first down. Another Alston carry, another first down. Alston ran again, and there was a measurement, but the answer was the same. Alston carried from his 22-yard line to the Dinwiddie 3. And then quarterback Tajh Boyd dropped the ball into the corner of the end zone to a wide-open Daqaun Romero.
Determined as snow sticking to frozen Worsham Field, Phoebus stifled the potent Dinwiddie offense and pulled away to a 37-13 win in the Group AAA, Division 5 final.
Alston spearheaded the Phantoms' attack with 237 yards on 30 carries and scored twice. After his 8-yard touchdown run put Phoebus ahead 14-0 after slightly more than seven minutes, quarterback Adam Morgan took the Generals 75 yards to score, hitting Jerrell White from 21 yards out for the touchdown.
Morgan exhibited mobility and concentration on the drive, dancing, ducking and keeping Phoebus defenders at arm's length while focusing on receivers downfield.
"Coming out, I knew he was a good quarterback," defensive lineman Dominik Davenport said. "But I didn't know the speed and being outside the pocket was going to be a problem like that."
The Generals' defense held through the rest of the half. They know their responsibility -- just keep it close. They expected the offense would get hot. All season, Morgan has been wearing a piece of tape around his right wrist, his throwing arm, inked with the word 'Fuego.'
Phoebus punted twice to finish the first quarter. Freshman Drakar Harvell, in at safety because of injuries, intercepted a pair of Boyd passes.
But even though he threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns, Morgan never ignited the offense.
"My offensive line held them off," he said. "We just had to get open. When we got open, had a few dropped balls, overthrown balls. We just weren't connecting like we have been all year."
The Phantoms dominated the second half. With 1:34 remaining, Dinwiddie finally scored again as Morgan completed a 7-yard pass to White to tie the most points allowed by Phoebus this season.
"We knew it was going to be a stiff challenge to be able to put points on the board and be able to move the ball on them," Generals coach Billy Mills said. "I was proud of what our kids did. We moved the ball on them as well as anybody we've seen, and we've seen about all their games. We just couldn't finish drives. You know, we'd have a penalty or we'd have a mistake here or there."
Morgan added the season record for touchdown passes to his accomplishments, throwing for 48. In his career, he completed 675 passes, 113 for touchdowns and threw for more than 9,000 yards -- all state records. Dinwiddie's core is a group of seniors, including Morgan, who were freshmen when Mills took over the program.
"I told them out there, 'Don't let today take away from what you guys have done for this program,'" Mills said. "I'm very proud of what these guys have done."
