Varina ran away from Armstrong - literally. The Blue Devils amassed 578 yards on the ground in their 62-20 victory over the Wildcats last night.

Trey Johnson rushed for 266 yards on 11 carries and scored four times as Varina remain undefeated in the Capital District at 5-0. The Blue Devils improved to 8-1 for the season. Breon Jones had six tackles (three for loss) as Varina scored on five of its first seven plays from scrimmage.

Xavier Gary went 11-for-36 for 215 yards and three touchdowns for Armstrong which fell to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the district. The Wildcats were held to minus-5 yards rushing.

Brendan Riddick threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Panthers scored the last 53 points to stay unbeaten in the Colonial District by beating the Vikings.

Easton Gordon (70 yards) hauled in a Riddick touchdown and rushed another one in for Hermitage (6-0, 8-1). Derrick Britt led all the receivers with 84 yards on five catches and Nick Yurchak and Desmond Williams each caught touchdown passes. Raynard Revels led the defensive effort with three tackles and a 10-yard interception return for a score.

Marvin Robinson connected with Darius Simpson for a 60-yard touchdown strike to get the Vikings (0-6, 0-9) on the board in the first quarter.

Jaquan Burchette scampered 90 yards for a score on the fourth play of the game and the Springers stayed unbeaten in the Capital District by beating the Raiders.

Burchette ran for another touchdown and tossed a scoring pass, finishing with 114 yards rushing and 67 yards passing with four interceptions. John Saunders led the Springers' rushing attack with 18 carries for 115 yards. Highland Springs (5-0, 8-1) held Atlee (2-3, 5-4) to 112 yards of offense. Derek Hopkins had two sacks for the Springers.

FARMVILLE - Shawn Minor was a threat on all fronts, passing for two touchdowns, rushing for one and returning a punt for yet another score in the No. 7 Indians' Southside District romp.

Powhatan (6-0, 9-0) hit on all cylinders early. Larry Bradley carried seven times for 109 yards and the first score of the game before getting the rest of the night off.

Minor attempted just four passes but completed three for 122 yards. Josh Ingram caught two passes for 83 yards and a TD.

Kurt Taylor scored from each side of the ball, returning a fumble 26 yards for one touchdown and rushing yards for another score.

Michael Mey intercepted a Patrick Henry pass in overtime at the goal line to end the drive, then connected with Jered Bennett on a 29-yard score to secure the Tigers' Colonial District win over the Patriots.

In the fourth quarter, with Patrick Henry up 28-21 and 1:45 to go, Jacob Bennett returned a kick off 46 yards to the Patriots' 34. On third down, brother Jered threw a 31-yard TD pass with 47 seconds remaining to send the game into OT.

Jacob finished with 21 carries for 87 yards, 122 return yardage and 216 all-purpose for J.R. Tucker (5-1, 7-2). Jered was 5 for 14 for 85 yards, 63 of those in the fourth and OT.

Christian Conklin caught five passes for 79 yards and a touchdown for the winners (6-2, 7-2). Conklin also kicked a 38-yard field goal and punted three times, dropping two of those kicks inside the Huguenot 20.

Huguenot (2-5, 3-6) produced but 44 yards of offense. Cavaliers defensive tackle M.J. Luten delivered six stops, including three for 13 yards in losses.

WEST POINT - King William (3-0 Tidewater, 7-2) handed West Point (3-1, 9-1) its first loss of the season and took control of the Tidewater District.

West Point held a 12-0 lead at halftime, but King William's Daryl Powell scored three second-half touchdowns to give the Cavaliers he win. He had eight receptions for 100 yards.

Will White threw five touchdown passes in the first half, and Andrew Sarlo tied a school record as Trinity Episcopal's Titans romped past the Crusaders (6-4).

Almost all of White's 208 yards came in the first half. Sarlo's two touchdown catches gave him 11 for the season, tying the school record set by Cy McCue in 1979. Sarlo also broke up four passes.

Austin Wingfield threw a 56-yard TD pass 10 seconds into the game, setting the tone early, and Blessed Sacrament Huguenot finished third in VISAA Division III with a win over Southampton Academy.

Wingfield finished 5 of 8 for 118 yards and two TDs and connected with tailback Chris Howard (seven carries, 68 yards) for another score. Howard also had 10 tackles and two sacks, John Moore recorded 16 tackles and Deon Watts (7 carries, 81 yards, TD) forced a fumble for the Knights (4-1 VCC, 8-2), who begin playoffs next week at North Cross.
