Monacan, Atlee claim district golf titles
The Dominion District golf tournament turned into a banner event for the Monacan Chiefs.
The Chiefs compiled an 18-hole total of 301 (four counting scores) at Hunting Hawk Golf Course yesterday and captured the tourney title by 25 strokes over runner-up James River.
Both teams will represent the Dominion in the Central Region tournament next week at Jefferson-Lakeside Country Club and Stonehenge Country Club (Monacan's home course).
Because a scheduled playoff to determine the regular-season champ and the automatic berth in the region tournament that goes with it was canceled last Friday, the district tournament became the deciding event.
The Chiefs, led by medalist Brian Critzer, turned in four sub-80 scores. Critzer shot 72, Ryan Pratt and Gavin Parker added 75s and Braden Cosner contributed a 79.
Critzer was 2 under par on the front nine and 2 over on the inward half. He finished one stroke clear of James River's Sean Dougherty and two ahead of Cosby's Kevin Clarke.
Dougerty was the only Rapids player to break 80.
In addition to the two teams, six individuals not on a qualifying team earned bids to the region tournament. Clarke, the district player of the year, headlined that group.

Capital District
The Crossings Golf Course used to give Tanner Foutz a fit.
That changed this summer when Foutz, a junior at Atlee, finished as the runner-up in the RGA Junior after shooting two subpar rounds.
Foutz was even better at The Crossings yesterday in the Capital District tournament. He fired a 3-under-par 69 in windy conditions and captured medalist honors. Foutz also earned the medal at the season-opening Skyhawk Invitational as well.
Foutz's score, five strokes better than Hanover's Reece Chalkley, allowed the Raiders to nip Lee-Davis for second place and earn the district's second berth in the Central Region tournament.
Regular-season champion Hanover, already a qualifier for the region tourney, won the tournament title with a score of 326. Atlee shot 333, and Lee-Davis 334.
Lee-Davis didn't make it as a team, but all six Confederates qualified for the region tournament as individuals.

Colonial District
Reigning Central Region champion Deep Run needed to win the Colonial District tournament or finish second to Mills Godwin to have an opportunity to defend the title.
The Wildcats, who lost a playoff to Mills Godwin last week for the regular-season championship and the district's automatic spot in the region tournament, rolled to an easy victory yesterday at Hanover Country Club.
Mikey Cantor and Adam Anschultz posted 4-over-par 75s, and Jason Schumacher and Chris O'Neill, All-Metro selections a year ago, contributed 76s for a 302 total, 21 shots better than runner-up Douglas Freeman. Mills Godwin and Maggie Walker Governor's School tied for third at 329.
Cantor won medalist honors in a playoff. Jason Park of Mills Godwin, the district player of the year, and Tim Earley of Maggie Walker shot 77s and were the only other players to break 80.
Earley was the district's low individual qualifier for next week's region tournament. Although Hermitage finished last as a team, Thomas Cole won a playoff to qualify as an individual.
