Westfield leading Deep Run by four

Westfield posted a 6-over-par total of 294 to take the first-round lead in the third VSGA Foundation High School Invitational golf tournament yesterday at Independence Golf Club.

The Northern Virginia school has a four-stroke lead over reigning Central Region champion Deep Run. Mills Godwin, Monacan and Loudoun Valley are tied for third at 302.

The tournament field consists of 23 teams and five individuals. Defending champion James River turned in 317.

Tim Ritter paced Westfield with a 1-under 71. Chris O'Neill led Deep Run with a 70. Jason Park also shot 70 for Mills Godwin, and Ryan Pratt was low for Monacan with 74. Scott Davidson carded 72 for Loudoun Valley.

The overall individual lead belongs to State Junior champion Adam Ball of Richmond (he's home-schooled), who fired a 4-under 68. Trey Smith of Kellam (Virginia Beach) is a stroke back after a 69. O'Neill, Park and Jack Adkins of Carlisle trail by two.

Adam Ball's brother, Matthew Jr., is at 71 with Ritter and Landon Weis of Western Albemarle.
