Central Region track, day one

A girl named Powell won the pole vault and still holds the Central Region track and field meet record.

The first name changed, however.

Lizzie Powell of Patrick Henry vaulted 12-1 yesterday afternoon at Sports Backers Stadium and surpassed the mark of 12-0 set by her sister, Annie, in 2007.

Powell finished ahead of Cameron Overstreet of Atlee. Powell's expected duel with Atlee's Emma DeJarnette never got off the ground. DeJarnette no-heighted and aborted several approaches.

Manchester leads the girls standings after Day One thanks to victories in the long jump by Nikki Nunn and a one-two finish by Jasmine Eddy and Elise King in the shot put.

Garrett Tyler of Meadowbrook won the boys high jump to give the Monarchs a two-point team lead over Douglas Freeman. The Rebels won the 3,200 relay.

Austin Hersh of James River continued to dominate the discus, winning with a toss of 161 feet.
