Winning six events and scoring in nine others, St. Christopher's amassed 156 points to win the Virginia Independent Schools boys track and field championship yesterday at Sports Backers Stadium.

Fork Union, whose 21-year state meet victory streak came to an end, was second with 83.5.

Collegiate placed third (60) and Woodberry Forest fourth (57).

"FUMA has always been the team in the state meet," said Saints' coach Marshall Ware.

"Our guys knew that to really make a mark, they had to beat the best.

"Last week (when St. Christopher's won the Prep League title), we did as well as we did because of our depth.

"We won this week with our range. We had someone pretty good in almost every event."

Norfolk Academy took the VIS girls' championship with 115.5 points. Collegiate (101) placed second and St. Catherine's (91.5) third.

Trinity Episcopal (46) was sixth.

St. Christopher's got first-place performances from Kurt Fleming (11.37 in the 100), Hiter Harris (22.76 in the 200), Ben Katz (meet record 6-8½ in the high jump), and Alex James (55-9¾ in the shot put).

The team of Harris, Katz, Fleming, and Edward Rives captured the 400 relay in a meet record 42.98.

Harris, who also placed second in the 100 in 11.45, was the meet's outstanding running event performer.

Katz, also second in the long jump (22-0½), shared outstanding field-event-performer honors with Norfolk Collegiate's Jeronimo Smith.

Collegiate's Alieu Sillah defended his state 400 title in 49.79 and ran the anchor leg (following Graham Glass, Robert Mertens, and David Allen) in the victorious 3200 meter relay (8:08.66).

The Cougars' Will Wright took the discus with a heave of 142-6.

Trinity Episcopal's Barbara Strehler won the 1,600 in 5:11.01 and the 3,200 in 11:35.03 and placed second in the 800 in 2:20.04. She was named outstanding running event performer.

Lissie Baker of St. Catherine's took the pole vault in 8-6.

Collegiate challenged Norfolk Academy for the girls' title until the final events.

The Cougars' Chloe Jefferson won the discus with a throw of 95-1, and the 3,200 relay team of Liza Crenshaw, Margaret Barton, Chloe Coates and Jasmine Turner finished second in 10:14.46. Collegiate's Dominique Meeks placed second in the shot put (37-0 ½).
