Evan Charles
Deep Run tennis
What he did: The Wildcats' No.2 player, Charles lost the first set to Mills Godwin's Kevin McMillen but bounced back to win the next two to give Deep Run a vital point in its 5-4 victory over the Eagles. It was the first time Deep Run has defeated Mills Godwin, which hadn't lost to a Central Region team since April, 2005. Charles, a sophomore, also won a match against Atlee and is unbeaten in singles this season.
Age: 16
Three words your friends would use to describe you: "Smart, serious, quiet."
Strengths: "Mental strength and leadership."
Toughest opponent other than yourself: "Our No.1, Hunter Koontz. I never seem to win against him anymore. But the matches are always close."
I'm working to improve: "My ground strokes and getting to the net some."
Favorite food: Cheeseburger
Favorite ice cream: Cookies and cream
Best sports memory: "Has to be beating Godwin for the first time in school history."
Biggest challenge: "Beating Godwin again and going on to win the state championship against Fairfax or Robinson."
If he had one wish: "That we win the state title this year." (There is only one senior.)
Possession you can't do without: "My tennis rackets."
Sports person he admires most: Pete Sampras
What's on your iPod: "Lots of U2."
Facebook or MySpace: "Don't have either. I don't use the computer that much."
One thing about you most people don't know: "I used to play a lot of soccer." He made tennis his sport when he was in the sixth grade.
