Evan Charles
School: Deep RunYear: Sophomore
The Skinny: Playing No.2 singles and No.1 doubles with Hunter Koontz, Charles helped Deep Run defeat Mills Godwin and win the Colonial District title. He lost just three singles matches and teamed with Koontz to advance to the state tournament in doubles. The Wildcats were the region and state runners-up in team competition.
What you didn't know: "When I was 12 years old, I played in a tournament in England and got to the final. I didn't win."
Colin Elliott
School: CollegiateYear: Senior
The Skinny: After an opening-match loss to Mills Godwin's Kevin McMillen, Elliott didn't lose again in singles or doubles as the Cougars captured their first Prep League and state (VIS) titles. Co-captain Elliott, a four-year top-six player, teamed with Max Schnur in doubles. The Cougars' only loss as a team was to Godwin. He was Collegiate's No.1 player last year and played No.2 this season.
What you didn't know: "I have caramel ice cream every night and most mornings."
Hunter Koontz
School: Deep RunYear: Sophomore
The Skinny: Koontz played No.1 singles and doubles on a very young Wildcats squad that was the runner-up in the Central Region and state team tournaments. Three of his four singles losses were to Mills Godwin's Kyle Parker, but he beat him in the state team final. Koontz was the region runner-up in singles and doubles and advanced to the state semifinals in singles and doubles.
What you didn't know: "I always have a Rice Krispie treat and a Coke before my big matches."
Kevin McMillen
School: Mills GodwinYear: Senior
The Skinny: McMillen moved up from No.3 as a freshman to play No.2 for three years. He's been All-Metro for four years. He lost twice in singles this year and scored key points in the Eagles' state tournament victories over Robinson in the quarterfinals and Deep Run in the final. McMillen teamed with Kyle Parker in doubles this year, and they won the region crown and advanced to the state semifinals.
What you didn't know: "My nickname is McChillen."
Kyle Parker
School: Mills GodwinYear: Senior
The Skinny: The Eagles' No.1 player has been All-Metro and the T-D's top player all four years. A state team title this year capped a sterling high school career. He won three Central Region singles and doubles titles. He was 24-3 in singles and 17-1 with McMillen in doubles this year. Parker played for state titles (singles this year) and doubles (2006, 2007) but was runner-up each time. The Eagles' four-year record with Parker and McMillen: 84-4 (21-1 each year).
What you didn't know: "I'm an expert in martial arts."
Max Schnur
School: CollegiateYear: Sophomore
The Skinny: Earned the No.1 spot early in the season. Gained payback for two losses to Woodberry's top player with a victory in the Prep League tournament. Schnur has been in the starting six since he was in the seventh grade. He and Elliott didn't lose a doubles match this year.
What you didn't know: "I've played all sorts of sports at different levels, but the only time I've broken a bone was when I was playing a friendly game of water basketball. I fractured by hand."
