CNBC name contest draws 9,000

The call for a wild card entry in the Richmond baseball franchise's name-the-team contest drew more than 9,000 submissions in fewer than 12 hours yesterday.

CNBC and the Class AA club invited interested parties to e-mail suggestions to CNBC from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. About 60 minutes before last night's deadline, CNBC sports business reporter Darren Rovell said CNBC had received more than 9,000 entries. On Tuesday, Rovell projected CNBC's portion of the voting would draw "a couple hundred."

Franchise operators earlier in the week announced their five finalists -- Flatheads, Flying Squirrels, Hambones, Rock Hoppers and Rhinos -- from the approximately 6,000 entries they received. CNBC then requested an opportunity to get involved. The club modified the selection process. The vote conducted by CNBC will provide a sixth finalist, a wild card. That name, picked by CNBC and not necessarily the top vote-getter in its wild card contest, will be revealed this morning.

"If I see [a large number of votes] for the same one, and it's clear to me -- especially if it's coming from people in Richmond -- that they really want that name, it would be hard to deny that as the wild card entry," Rovell said.

Franchise front-office members will weigh, through additional voting, public opinion regarding the six finalists. The name of Richmond's Eastern League team will be chosen by the club and announced a week from today. -- John O'Connor

It occured to me that the team’s name should reflect our unique location on the James River.Accordingly the Richmond “Rapids” has a good ring to it in my opinion.
I’ve no clue how to get this idea to the right place so if you agree please forward this to someone who might be helpful. Many thanks.

we need local ownership???  i kind of agree, since Atlanta owned our team for years…  they spent NO money to upgrade anything, spent NO time to make any improvements, and sent NONE of their top prospects our way in years (all the top ones stayed in AA ball closer to atlanta)...  and if you think Fox Hounds is better than Hambones….  (not)

First off, Richmond is far from a newbie town. We supported our beloved Braves for over 30 years, and they have left big shoes too fill. So the newcomers here are the new owners not the Richmond baseball fans. We like our baseball teams, and do not want them to have a dumb name like most of the ones submitted. It would not seem smart to tick off your fans, by shoving an unpopular name down their collective throats, because you will pay at the box office.
No one was more happy to get a team than me, but right now I’m losing interest. Further, we need local ownership to feel committed.
Go Fox Hounds or Retreivers or Ramblers
All better than the picked six.

I agree the CNBC was a waste of time. The promoters/owners already know what the name will be, they just wanted to see how much interest people took in the whole thing….it was a marketing thing. It accomplished exactly what they wanted to…they got a reaction from the public.

Dang, can you people be more pessimistic. You complian when we have baseball, you complain when we don’t have baseball. Just get over it and have some fun.

When I first saw the proposed names, I had the same reaction as a majority of people. However, in time I have come to agree with “Cabbage”. I think all of us in Richmond need to lighten up - baseball is a sport - it’s supposed to be FUN; we’re supposed to be entertained. We’re all taking this WAY too seriously.

People all over the country are probably laughing at Richmond, named Sporting News’ 138th best sports town and falling. These names are such a joke and embarrassing!

All you naysayers ……So what if the contest is a sham - Domino and Parnell are marketing professionals….they have proven they know what they a doing ……Most of you posters are clueless newbies who only superficially know the workings of Minor League Baseball.

Domino and Parnell: stay your course - these posters don’t know what’s good for this town.….. bring on goofy and quirky.

What was the point of the CNBC thing if all they’re gonna do is pick the most popular entry?  The baseball owners already know the most popular entries.  That was a big waste of time.

I suspect that CNBC will pick the one which gets the most votes. If the team doesn’t pick that one we will know the whole contest was pretty much a sham.
