Motorsports notes: Johnson named best of 2008; Gibbs says match race is “gonna be ugly”

CONCORD, N.C. -- Jimmie Johnson, the three-time defending Sprint Cup champion, repeated as the SPEED Driver of the Year today.

Former Indianapolis 500 winner Mario Andretti presented the award to Johnson during NASCAR's pre-season media gathering. Others receiving votes for the award were Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton and Cup runner-up Carl Edwards.

In other motorsports news:

  • Sprint Cup team owner and Hall of Fame NFL Coach Joe Gibbs says he is looking forward to driving in an Arena Racing match race Friday at the Hampton Coliseum. Gibbs will square off against his friend and team backer Norm Miller, chairman of Interstate Batteries.

    "It's gonna be ugly, " Gibbs said, laughing. "I'm telling you, if Norm thinks he can beat me, it's gonna be ugly. . . . I'll try not to rough him up -- unless he gets in front of me."

    Miller suggested he get a head start since at 70 he is two years older than Gibbs. That didn't sit well with Gibbs.

    "Coaches age faster," he said, "seven years for every one year of coaching. I'm not going to give Norm any advantage."

  • Denny Hamlin, a former Chesterfield resident, said he's considering a proposal that would raffle free tickets for Sprint Cup and Nationwide events throughout the 2009 season.

    "What I was talking about doing is just buying up some tickets at every race and giving them away to get more people to go to these races," Hamlin said. "It's going to be important for us to get back in touch with the guy that travels week-in and week-out in his motor home to the races."

  • NASCAR Media Group is producing a documentary on the silver anniversary of Hendrick Motorsports. The documentary is scheduled for release later this year. The team's drivers have won eight Sprint Cup titles -- four by Jeff Gordon, three by Jimmie Johnson, one by Terry Labonte.
